Girona FC head coach Míchel Sánchez could have several options this summer, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The Spaniard has indicated that he will delay any decision regarding his future until Girona have mathematically secured their place in La Liga for next season. The club are currently in a stable position, sitting 13th—six points clear of the relegation zone—while remaining within four points of a potential European qualification spot.

Ajax Register Interest

AFC Ajax have now emerged as a serious contender for Míchel’s signature. According to reports from RadioMarca, the Dutch club are considering a managerial change, with current head coach Fred Grim expected to depart at the end of the campaign.

Recently appointed sporting director Jordi Cruyff is said to be keen on bringing Míchel to Amsterdam and has already made initial contact with his representatives.

Cruyff is well acquainted with Míchel’s work, having previously served as sporting director at FC Barcelona during the season in which Girona finished third in La Liga. Notably, Girona defeated Barcelona twice that campaign, scoring eight goals across the two encounters.

Villarreal and Other Interest

Interest in Míchel is not limited to Ajax. Villarreal CF are also monitoring the situation, with current manager Marcelino García Toral yet to confirm whether he will extend his contract.

Míchel has previously been linked with a move to Manchester City, and with uncertainty surrounding Pep Guardiola’s long-term future, speculation over a potential step up has persisted.

Speaking recently, Míchel expressed confidence in his ability to manage at the highest level.

“I do see myself as ready. I feel capable of coaching any team. I do not know if others see it that way, but I believe I can adapt and I want to experience it,” he said.

Future in Doubt

After five highly successful years at the Estadi Montilivi, it appears increasingly likely that Míchel could depart Girona this summer as he considers the next step in his managerial career.
