Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of former Liverpool defender Andy Robertson on a free transfer.
Tottenham Complete Signing of Former Liverpool Defender Andy Robertson on Free Transfer
The Scotland captain had been close to joining Spurs during the January transfer window, but Liverpool were unable to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma, resulting in the proposed move being cancelled.
However, despite managerial changes at Tottenham since then, head coach Roberto De Zerbi has approved Robertson’s arrival, with the experienced left-back set to officially join the club on 1 July following the expiration of his Liverpool contract this month.
Robertson departs Anfield after making 378 appearances for Liverpool and leaves behind a remarkable legacy following nine successful seasons at the club.
Speaking on the signing, De Zerbi expressed his excitement about bringing the Scotland international to North London.
“Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team.
“He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch.
“I can’t wait to start working with him and seeing the positive impact he will have on everyone around him.”
Robertson’s immediate attention remains focused on leading Scotland at this summer’s FIFA World Cup before linking up with his new teammates after the tournament.
In a brief video message sent from Scotland’s World Cup training camp in the United States, Robertson shared his excitement about the move.
“I’m in America at the moment preparing for the World Cup, but I just wanted to send you a quick message to say I cannot wait to play for you guys.
“I cannot wait to meet you all, I cannot wait to play in the stadium for the first time in front of you, and I’m already looking forward to next season.”
Tottenham’s pursuit of experienced leadership comes after another difficult campaign. Spurs required victory over Everton on the final day of the 2025–26 Premier League season to avoid relegation, with successive 17th-place finishes prompting action from both the club hierarchy and majority owners ENIC, led by the Lewis family.
The club has identified a need for stronger leadership within the squad, alongside a desire to improve team culture and raise standards at the Hotspur Way training complex.
Robertson’s professionalism and winning mentality, developed throughout his years at Liverpool, were viewed as major factors behind the decision to bring him to North London.
The energetic full-back is expected to provide competition for Destiny Udogie at left-back. Udogie has remained Tottenham’s established first-choice option on the left side of defence over the past three seasons despite enduring several injury setbacks.
Sporting director Johan Lange welcomed the arrival of Robertson and highlighted the qualities he will add to the squad.
“We are delighted to welcome Andy to the club.
“First and foremost, he is an outstanding left-back — one of the finest the Premier League has seen — and someone who will strengthen our squad.
“In addition, his quality, character and leadership have been evident throughout a career in which he has regularly competed for and won major honours.
“Andy’s professionalism and commitment will also be invaluable to the continued development of our squad, and he shares our ambition and determination to bring success back to the club.
“We are excited for Andy’s new chapter with us and look forward to welcoming him after the World Cup.”
Now 32, Robertson began his professional journey with Queen’s Park in Scotland before spending three years at Hull City, where his performances attracted the attention of Liverpool.
During his time at Anfield, he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most accomplished full-backs, winning two league titles and lifting the UEFA Champions League.
