Four nurses in Bunia have recovered from Ebola, offering hope that response efforts are improving. The WHO says five people have now been discharged. However, the outbreak continues, with 282 confirmed cases, 246 suspected deaths, and over 1,100 suspected cases under investigation. It began on May 15 in Ituri and has spread to three provinces in DR Congo and Uganda.
Five Health Workers Recover from Ebola in DR Congo
The recovery of four nurses who were being treated at a hospital in Bunia has brought renewed hope that the response to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is beginning to yield positive results.
Health officials say the recoveries are an encouraging sign, especially as frontline health workers are among those most at risk during outbreaks. The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed on Sunday that a total of five people have now recovered from the disease and have been discharged after receiving treatment.
However, authorities continue to express concern over the scale of the outbreak. According to data released by the country’s communications ministry, the number of confirmed Ebola cases has risen to 282, following 19 newly recorded positive test results in recent reporting updates.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) reported a more severe wider impact, noting that there have been 246 suspected deaths linked to the outbreak. It also said that more than 1,100 suspected cases are currently under investigation as health teams work to trace contacts and confirm infections.
The outbreak was officially declared on May 15 in Ituri province in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since then, it has spread beyond its original location and has been detected in three provinces. Health authorities have also confirmed cases in neighbouring Uganda, raising concerns about cross-border transmission and the need for coordinated regional response efforts.
Medical teams, international partners, and local health workers continue to strengthen surveillance, isolation, and treatment measures in an effort to contain the spread of the virus and reduce fatalities.
