England head coach Thomas Tuchel has revealed that Harry Maguire currently sits behind four defenders in the pecking order ahead of this summer’s World Cup.
Thomas Tuchel Names Four Defenders Ahead of £80m Manchester United Star in England World Cup Plans
The Manchester United centre-back returned to international action this week for the first time since September 2024, starting in England’s 1–1 draw with Uruguay at Wembley on Friday evening.
Maguire Impresses on Return
Despite his absence from the national side, the 33-year-old has enjoyed a resurgence in form at club level, delivering consistent performances for Manchester United since Michael Carrick assumed managerial duties at Old Trafford in January.
Tuchel acknowledged Maguire’s solid display against Uruguay, praising his composure and aerial dominance.
“I got exactly what I expected — solid central defensive play,” Tuchel said. “He is very good on the ball, calm under pressure, strong in the air and a real threat from set-pieces.”
Four Defenders Ahead in Selection Hierarchy
However, Tuchel made it clear that several defenders remain ahead of Maguire in his current plans. The England manager named Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, Trevoh Chalobah and John Stones as preferred options.
“I haven’t changed my mind,” Tuchel explained. “I see other players I prefer to start, players with different profiles.
“I see Ezri Konsa ahead, Marc Guehi ahead — that is no secret. Trevoh Chalobah, in terms of mobility, is slightly ahead as well.
“John Stones is also in that group, although he has been dealing with injuries and needed to come into camp.”
Tournament Experience Still Valued
Despite ranking lower in the current pecking order, Tuchel emphasised that Maguire still possesses qualities that could prove crucial in tournament football.
“He has attributes that can be extremely important — particularly in knockout matches,” Tuchel added. “Whether it is defending a lead or chasing a game with crosses, long throw-ins and set-pieces, he offers something different.”
World Cup Selection Still Open
When asked whether Maguire would make the World Cup squad if it were to be selected immediately, Tuchel remained non-committal, pointing to the uncertainty surrounding injuries and squad depth.
“If we had to name the squad tomorrow, with the injuries we have, he could be included,” he said. “He performed exactly as expected and I am very happy with him.
“But there is no need to make that decision now.”
