Paul Scholes has urged Manchester United to undertake a significant overhaul of their first-team squad this summer, identifying several players he believes should be moved on — including former Chelsea FC midfielder Mason Mount.

United have climbed to third place in the Premier League following an impressive revival under interim head coach Michael Carrick, who took charge after the departure of Ruben Amorim.

With no cup competitions to distract them during the run-in, the club are now on course to secure UEFA Champions League qualification for the first time since their group-stage exit in 2023.

Significant investment was made last summer, with approximately £200 million spent to bolster the attack. Benjamin Šeško, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were all recruited for substantial fees, while goalkeeper Senne Lammens arrived from Royal Antwerp for around £18 million, providing stability in goal following inconsistencies during Andre Onana’s tenure as first choice.

Attention is now turning towards further squad restructuring, with central midfield identified as a priority area. Casemiro has already indicated that the current campaign will be his final season at Old Trafford, and further departures are expected.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes outlined his views while taking part in a ‘keep or sell’ discussion alongside former United teammate Nicky Butt.

The former England international suggested a number of high-profile players could be allowed to leave, naming Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Noussair Mazraoui, Patrick Dorgu, Luke Shaw, Mount, Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee as potential departures, in addition to Casemiro.

Manchester United return to Premier League action on Sunday with a crucial fixture against Liverpool FC at Old Trafford.

The two rivals are separated by just three points in the table, with Arne Slot’s Liverpool side capable of overtaking United with victory.
