Former Real Madrid captain and club legend Raul Gonzalez has emerged as a central figure in the presidential campaign of Real Madrid candidate Enrique Riquelme, who has pledged to appoint him as Sporting Director if elected.
Raul Gonzalez Tipped for Sporting Director Role in Real Madrid Election Campaign
Raul, who departed Real Madrid Castilla last summer after five years in charge of the reserve side, has yet to take up a new coaching role despite being linked with several managerial opportunities. The former striker had long been viewed as a potential future first-team manager, but the club opted for a different direction, promoting Alvaro Arbeloa within their coaching structure instead.
Riquelme Confirms Raul Appointment Plan
Speaking during an interview, Riquelme revealed that Raul would spearhead his sporting project should he succeed long-serving president Florentino Perez.
The presidential hopeful emphasised the need to restore what he described as Real Madrid’s traditional identity and values, arguing that a figure with Raul’s experience, achievements and deep understanding of the club would be ideally suited to guide football operations.
Raul remains one of the most decorated figures in Real Madrid history, having made more than 740 appearances, scored over 300 goals and represented Spain on more than 100 occasions.
Ambitious Transfer Plans
Riquelme also outlined his intention to strengthen the squad with world-class additions. Among the names admired by the candidate is Rodri, whom he described as the type of player Real Madrid should pursue.
While acknowledging that Rodri remains under contract with Manchester City, Riquelme revealed that contact has already been made with the midfielder's representatives and hinted that two major signings are being prepared as part of his campaign vision.
Mourinho and Arteta Not in Plans
Riquelme also distanced himself from potential managerial appointments involving Mikel Arteta and Jose Mourinho.
Although Mourinho has been linked with a possible return to the Santiago Bernabéu, Riquelme suggested that the Portuguese coach would not fit the direction he wants the club to take, insisting Real Madrid requires a different profile at this stage of its development.
A New Political Battle at Real Madrid
With elections expected to become increasingly competitive, Riquelme is attempting to present a vision built around club identity, legendary figures and marquee signings. His public commitment to Raul signals an effort to reconnect with supporters who value the club's traditions while also promising an ambitious sporting future.
Whether that vision will be enough to challenge the influence and legacy of Florentino Perez remains one of the major questions surrounding Real Madrid's next presidential race.
