Nottingham Forest Secure Crucial Point Against Aston Villa in Survival Battle

Nottingham Forest strengthened their bid for Premier League survival with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Aston Villa at the City Ground.

A composed finish from Neco Williams seven minutes before half-time cancelled out an earlier own goal by Murillo, ensuring Forest extended their unbeaten run to four matches under head coach Vitor Pereira.

With Tottenham Hotspur suffering defeat at Sunderland, the result leaves Forest three points clear of the relegation zone with six fixtures remaining.

Villa, meanwhile, boosted their hopes of securing a UEFA Champions League place but will be frustrated not to have claimed all three points after creating a number of clear opportunities. Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins both came close to finding the decisive goal.

The visitors endured a setback before kick-off, with first-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez forced to withdraw following the warm-up — the third such occurrence this season. Marco Bizot was drafted in and quickly called into action, producing early saves to deny Williams.

Forest made a positive start but fell behind in the 23rd minute. A low delivery from Rogers on the left flank struck Murillo and deflected into his own net, handing Villa the advantage.

The visitors grew into the contest and nearly doubled their lead in the 35th minute when John McGinn set up Rogers, whose effort struck the crossbar.

However, Forest responded swiftly. A well-constructed move saw Ola Aina deliver a cross to Callum Hudson-Odoi, who teed up Williams to fire a low 20-yard strike past Bizot at the near post.

The hosts carried momentum into the second half, with Igor Jesus heading over before firing another effort wide from distance. Bizot was later required to make a crucial save, reacting sharply to keep out a deflected attempt from Morgan Gibbs-White.

Villa regained control as the half progressed and created several opportunities to restore their lead. McGinn was denied by an excellent save from Matz Sels, while Rogers squandered a gilt-edged chance from close range, sending his effort high over the crossbar after Sels had parried a shot from Ross Barkley.

Watkins came within inches of scoring in the 78th minute, guiding a first-time strike narrowly over from a pass by Emiliano Buendía.

Villa pressed for a late winner, with Sels producing further saves to deny Ian Maatsen and Matty Cash, but Forest held firm to secure a valuable point.

The result leaves both sides with plenty to play for in the closing stages of the season — Forest in their fight for survival, and Villa in their pursuit of European qualification.
