The Pharaohs secure qualification with a commanding win over Djibouti, while Ghana close in on a place at the finals.

Egypt have officially booked their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after cruising to a 3–0 victory over Djibouti in Casablanca. The win ensures qualification with a match to spare and marks a triumphant return to the global stage after missing out on Qatar 2022.

Mohamed Salah was the star of the night, scoring twice to lead the Pharaohs to their fourth World Cup appearance. It took only minutes for Egypt to open the scoring when Zizo’s perfectly weighted cross found Ibrahim Adel, who rose unmarked to head home.

Shortly afterwards, Salah doubled the lead, latching on to a precise through ball before finishing clinically. Egypt controlled the game from that point on, and Salah completed the rout late on with a brilliantly executed volley to seal the victory in style.

Ghana on the brink of qualification

Ghana also moved to the verge of securing their place at the finals with a resounding victory in El Jadida. Otto Addo’s side dominated from the outset, breaking the deadlock when an unmarked Mohammed Salisu headed in from a Mohammed Kudus corner.

Jordan Ayew then showcased his class, dribbling past two defenders before setting up Thomas Partey to make it 2–0. Alexander Djiku added a third with a powerful header from an Ayew corner, and the Crystal Palace forward got on the scoresheet himself with a superb volley.

Ayew was again instrumental as Kamaldeen Sulemana completed the 5–0 rout at the far post. The result leaves Ghana three points clear of second-placed Madagascar, with a vastly superior goal difference and just one round of fixtures remaining.

Cabo Verde lead their section, others eliminated

Elsewhere, Cabo Verde missed the chance to confirm their qualification but remain in pole position after a thrilling 3–3 draw with Libya. They now sit two points clear at the top of their group heading into the final matchday.

Meanwhile, the qualifying hopes of Angola, Comoros, Guinea-Bissau, Mali and Sierra Leone have come to an end following their latest results.

Egypt’s qualification underscores their resurgence on the African stage, while Ghana, Cabo Verde and several other sides now look to follow them to the United States, Canada and Mexico in 2026.
