Liverpool have officially confirmed the signing of Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, with the 20-year-old set to join the club later this year.

Jacquet underwent a medical on Merseyside ahead of the closing of the winter transfer window. The deal, reported to be worth $82 million (£60m), includes $75 million (£55m) paid upfront and $6.8 million (£5m) in add-ons. The defender has signed a five-year contract running until the summer of 2031, with an option for an additional year.

The move comes after Jacquet had been heavily linked with Chelsea earlier in the window, as well as attracting interest from Bayern Munich. Liverpool ultimately secured the signature, with sporting director Richard Hughes reportedly overseeing accelerated negotiations over the weekend.

Jacquet will complete the 2025/26 season at Rennes before moving to Anfield in the summer, pending a work permit and international clearance, Liverpool confirmed.

A pathway to first-team football

The young defender is said to have chosen Liverpool over Chelsea due to the prospect of more regular first-team opportunities at Anfield. His signing marks the end of what has been a relatively quiet transfer window for the Reds, with no other major first-team arrivals in January.

However, Liverpool have strengthened their academy with the acquisitions of young defenders Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe. Ndiaye has already joined the academy, while Ndukwe will follow Jacquet to Merseyside in the summer from Austria Vienna.

Recent departures

Liverpool have also seen four players leave Anfield during the month. Full-back James Norris, 22, completed a permanent move to Irish side Shelbourne, while Luke Chambers and Lewis Koumas joined Championship clubs Charlton and Hull on loan. Calum Scanlon has moved on a temporary deal to League One side Cardiff City.

Jacquet’s arrival signals Liverpool’s commitment to strengthening their defensive options and adds a highly rated young talent to their squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
