Lionel Messi reached another historic milestone by scoring the 900th goal of his career, but it was not enough to prevent Inter Miami CF from being knocked out of the CONCACAF Champions Cup by Nashville SC.
Lionel Messi Nets 900th Career Goal as Nashville Eliminate Inter Miami from Champions Cup
The second-leg encounter, played on Wednesday night in Fort Lauderdale, ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving the aggregate score level at 1-1 across both fixtures. However, Nashville progressed to the quarter-finals on the away-goals rule.
Messi gave the hosts an early advantage, finding the net in just the seventh minute with a composed finish from close range. The strike marked a remarkable personal achievement, as the Argentine forward brought up 900 career goals for club and country.
Despite taking the lead, Inter Miami were unable to build on their advantage. Nashville responded after the interval through Cristian Espinoza, whose decisive goal ultimately secured their progression.
The equaliser came following a chaotic passage of play inside the Miami penalty area. A shot from Alex Muyl was initially blocked but looped dangerously towards the goal line. Goalkeeper Dayne St Clair managed to punch the ball clear under pressure, but it fell kindly to Espinoza, who calmly slotted a right-footed effort into the far corner.
Earlier, Sergio Reguilón had provided the assist for Messi’s opener, setting up the forward for a low strike that slipped through a defender’s legs before finding the back of the net.
Nashville will now face either Philadelphia Union or Club América in the quarter-finals as they continue their pursuit of continental success.
Meanwhile, Messi’s landmark goal further cements his place among football’s all-time greats. He currently sits second on the list of highest career goal scorers, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo, who has amassed 965 goals.
