Liverpool FC produced a commanding performance to overturn their first-leg deficit and secure a place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, while Atlético Madrid survived a spirited challenge from Tottenham Hotspur to progress.
Champions League Round-Up: Liverpool Surge Past Galatasaray as Atlético Madrid Hold Off Tottenham Fightback
Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray (Agg: 4-1)
Liverpool responded emphatically to recent domestic struggles by defeating Galatasaray 4-0 at Anfield, overturning a 1-0 first-leg deficit.
Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Hugo Ekitike, Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah sealed a comprehensive victory for Arne Slot’s side, setting up a quarter-final clash with defending champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Slot had demanded a reaction after Liverpool were booed off following a disappointing 1-1 Premier League draw against Tottenham, and his decision to rotate his squad at the weekend paid dividends as his side delivered a dominant display.
Galatasaray’s hopes suffered an early setback when Victor Osimhen sustained a forearm injury in a collision with Ibrahima Konaté. Although the Nigerian striker continued until half-time, he was visibly hindered and later replaced by Leroy Sané.
Liverpool had already drawn level on aggregate by then, with Szoboszlai opening the scoring in the 25th minute following a well-worked corner routine.
Despite creating several chances before the interval, Liverpool were initially denied further goals. Salah missed a clear opportunity to extend the lead, while Uğurcan Çakır produced a number of important saves, including a penalty stop to deny Salah after Szoboszlai was fouled in the area.
However, the second half proved far more decisive. Salah made amends by providing a precise assist for Ekitike to double the lead, before Gravenberch added a third shortly afterwards by converting a rebound.
Salah then capped the performance with a superb strike — his 50th goal in the Champions League — following a clever backheel from Florian Wirtz. The Egyptian forward also struck the crossbar before being substituted late on with a minor injury concern.
Liverpool now face a stern test against PSG, who advanced with an emphatic 8-2 aggregate victory over Chelsea FC.
Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 Atlético Madrid (Agg: 5-7)
Atlético Madrid progressed to the quarter-finals despite a 3-2 second-leg defeat to Tottenham in north London, doing just enough to secure a 7-5 aggregate victory.
Diego Simeone’s side had built a commanding advantage in the first leg, leaving Tottenham with a daunting task. Nevertheless, the hosts produced a spirited performance in front of their supporters.
Randal Kolo Muani gave Tottenham the lead in the first half, but Atlético responded shortly after the restart through Julián Álvarez.
Xavi Simons restored Tottenham’s advantage with an impressive strike, only for Dávid Hancko to equalise and effectively end hopes of a remarkable comeback.
Simons converted a late penalty after being fouled by José María Giménez, but it proved insufficient as Atlético held on to progress.
Tottenham, managed by Igor Tudor, showed far greater resilience compared to the first leg, where they had fallen 4-0 behind inside 22 minutes. On this occasion, they created several chances, with Mathys Tel particularly influential in attack.
Atlético goalkeeper Juan Musso, deputising for the injured Jan Oblak, delivered a series of crucial saves to deny Tottenham a dramatic turnaround.
Atlético will now face FC Barcelona in the quarter-finals after the Catalan side secured a convincing aggregate victory over Newcastle United FC.
Focus Shifts to Domestic Campaigns
While Atlético continue their European journey, Tottenham’s exit leaves them facing a critical battle in the Premier League, where they remain close to the relegation zone.
Defender Micky van de Ven recently dismissed suggestions that the squad had lost motivation, and their determined performance against Atlético offered evidence of renewed commitment.
With survival now the priority, Tottenham must build on this display as they seek to avoid a difficult end to a challenging campaign.
