Lamine Yamal once again demonstrated his match-winning quality as the teenage sensation scored a superb goal to secure Barcelona a hard-fought 1–0 victory away to Athletic Club at San Mamés on Saturday.

The contest was fiercely competitive, with Athletic Club applying sustained attacking pressure throughout the match at their home ground. However, Yamal’s moment of brilliance ultimately proved decisive, tipping the balance in favour of the La Liga leaders.

The 18-year-old Spain international broke the deadlock in the 68th minute after receiving a well-weighted pass from Pedri. Finding rare space on the right side of the penalty area, Yamal took a touch to create an angle before curling a precise left-footed effort that struck the upper edge of the far post before nestling in the net.

Barcelona maintain title charge

The victory ensured Hansi Flick’s side remain four points clear of second-placed Real Madrid as they continue their pursuit of a successful La Liga title defence.

Yamal has been in exceptional form this season. In the previous round, he scored the first hat-trick of his league career during Barcelona’s emphatic 4–1 victory over Villarreal.

His goal against Athletic Club brought his tally for the campaign to 19, already surpassing the total he recorded during the entire previous season.

Pedri praised the young forward’s ability but emphasised the importance of maintaining focus and continued development.

“We know what Lamine is capable of,” Pedri said. “He simply placed the ball in the corner where the goalkeeper could not reach it.

“The only thing he must avoid is becoming satisfied with what he has already achieved. He just needs to keep working hard and continue giving everything.”

Barcelona respond after Copa del Rey disappointment

Barcelona’s hard-earned win came just four days after their elimination from the Copa del Rey at the hands of Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals.

With a demanding schedule ahead, Flick opted to rotate several regular starters ahead of Barcelona’s trip to Newcastle on Tuesday for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie.

Pedri, Raphinha and Fermín López all began the match on the bench and were introduced during the final half-hour.

Marcus Rashford, Marc Bernal and Marc Casadó were among those included in the starting line-up, while Eric García and João Cancelo filled in at full-back due to injuries to Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde.

Barcelona also relied on an important performance from goalkeeper Joan García, whose saves ensured the match remained goalless until Yamal’s decisive strike.

Atletico edge Real Sociedad in thriller

Elsewhere in La Liga, Argentine midfielder Nico González scored twice in the second half to guide Atletico Madrid to a dramatic 3–2 victory over Real Sociedad.

The match featured the two Copa del Rey finalists, with Sociedad having secured their place in next month’s final in Seville earlier in the week after defeating Athletic Club in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Atletico sporting director Mateu Alemany dismissed speculation linking Antoine Griezmann with an imminent move to Major League Soccer, confirming that the experienced forward will remain with the Spanish club until the end of the season.

Mallorca held in Demichelis debut

At El Sadar, new Mallorca manager Martín Demichelis saw his side surrender a two-goal lead in a 2–2 draw away to Osasuna in his first match in charge.

Striker Vedat Muriqi scored twice to increase his La Liga tally to 18 goals this season, leaving him second only to Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé, who leads the scoring charts with 23.

However, Osasuna mounted a late comeback. Kike Barja reduced the deficit in the 89th minute before Ante Budimir struck deep into stoppage time to secure a dramatic equaliser.

Demichelis was appointed earlier in the week after Jagoba Arrasate was dismissed, with Mallorca battling to avoid relegation despite boasting one of the league’s most prolific strikers in Muriqi.

Late drama in Levante

In another match, Girona rescued a point with a dramatic late equaliser as Joel Roca scored in injury time to secure a 1–1 draw away to Levante.
