Jorrel Hato has attributed Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City to a significant drop in performance levels after the interval at Stamford Bridge.

In what proved to be a tale of two halves, there was little to separate the sides before the break, with both teams creating opportunities. However, a decisive 17-minute spell early in the second half saw City score three times to take complete control of the Premier League encounter.

Goals from Nico O'Reilly, Marc Guehi and Jeremy Doku secured all three points for the visitors, leaving Chelsea with little to show for their first-half efforts.

Hato, who featured at centre-back alongside Wesley Fofana, pointed to the team’s slow start to the second period as the key factor behind the defeat.

“It’s disappointing because of how we started the second half,” Hato said after the match.

“I think the first half was a good contest from both sides. We created chances and they did as well, but once we conceded the first goal after the break, we seemed to lose our shape. From that point, they took control of the game and our response was not good enough.”

The Dutch defender acknowledged that City’s intensity after the restart proved difficult to contain.

“The way we came out for the second half was not good enough. To be fair to City, they created three or four chances in a short period, and we struggled to get a foothold higher up the pitch.

“Once they scored, it felt like our level dropped. We have to be better than that.”

Despite the setback, Chelsea remain sixth in the Premier League standings and are still firmly in contention for a top-five finish, which would secure UEFA Champions League qualification. However, the gap to the chasing pack has narrowed.

Under head coach Liam Rosenior, the Blues are now under pressure to respond quickly, with a crucial fixture against Manchester United looming on Saturday evening at Stamford Bridge.

Hato emphasised the importance of an immediate improvement in performance levels:

“We still have a strong chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season, but we know we must improve.

“At a club like Chelsea, the expectation is to compete at the highest level. We want to be back in the Champions League, so we have to raise our standards.

“There are six matches remaining, so there is still a lot to play for. We need to move on quickly from this result and focus on the next big game.”

Chelsea will now look to regroup and rediscover their form as the race for European qualification intensifies in the closing stages of the season.
