Inter Milan moved to the brink of the Serie A title after staging a remarkable comeback to defeat Como 4-3 in a thrilling encounter on Sunday, extending their lead at the top of the table to nine points.
Inter Milan Edge Closer to Serie A Title After Dramatic Comeback Victory at Como
The result, coupled with Napoli being held to a 1-1 draw by Parma, leaves Inter in a commanding position with six matches remaining.
Inter appeared in danger of handing the reigning champions renewed hope when they fell two goals behind late in the first half. Alex Valle opened the scoring before Nico Paz doubled Como’s advantage with an impressive finish.
However, the visitors sparked their comeback in first-half stoppage time when Marcus Thuram turned in a cross from Nicolo Barella to reduce the deficit.
Thuram struck again moments after the restart, capitalising on a defensive mix-up between goalkeeper Jean Butez and defender Marc-Oliver Kempf to level the match.
Denzel Dumfries then completed the turnaround, powering home a header from Hakan Calhanoglu’s free-kick in the 58th minute before calmly adding his second goal of the match from close range after good work by Manuel Akanji.
With the victory, Inter now hold what appears to be an unassailable lead, while Como’s first defeat in two months sees them slip out of the UEFA Champions League places.
Despite the advantage, Barella remained cautious when asked about the title race, stating simply: “Let’s wait a little while.” Dumfries echoed that sentiment, adding:
“It was a great win today, but every match matters. We must remain focused.”
Como continued to fight until the final whistle. Lucas Da Cunha converted a late penalty following a foul by Ange-Yoan Bonny on Paz, before Alberto Moreno struck the crossbar with a last-gasp effort that nearly salvaged a point.
Head coach Cesc Fabregas praised his side’s performance despite the defeat:
“Today my team showed what we are capable of, playing with desire and courage.
“Yes, we made mistakes. We are a young team, and against opponents of this level, those mistakes are punished.”
Juventus have now overtaken Como to move into the top four, following the hosts’ setback.
Napoli’s Title Hopes Fade After Parma Draw
Napoli’s hopes of securing a third Serie A title in four seasons suffered a major blow after being held to a draw by Parma.
Scott McTominay rescued a point with a powerful strike shortly after the hour mark, cancelling out an early opener from Gabriel Strefezza, who scored within the opening minute after being set up by Nesta Elphege.
Despite their efforts, Napoli struggled to break down a resolute Parma defence, who sat deep and frustrated the visitors’ attacking play.
Manager Antonio Conte acknowledged the difficulty of the task:
“Conceding so early made the game far more difficult against a team already set up to defend deep.
“They organised themselves well and looked to counter-attack. I cannot fault my players’ desire and commitment.”
Following the weekend’s results, Napoli now require a dramatic collapse from Inter to revive their fading title ambitions.
Genoa Move Closer to Safety in Dramatic Victory
Elsewhere, Genoa boosted their survival hopes with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sassuolo.
The match was marred by a heated altercation in the tunnel, which resulted in red cards for Mikael Ellertsson and Domenico Berardi, leaving both sides with ten men for the second half.
Caleb Ekuban netted the decisive goal with six minutes remaining, securing a vital win that lifts Genoa nine points clear of the relegation zone.
Inter’s dramatic victory now leaves them firmly in control of the Serie A title race, with only a remarkable turnaround likely to deny them the crown.
