Fulham have officially confirmed that Marco Silva will leave his position as head coach after five successful years at Craven Cottage, amid growing interest from Portuguese giants Benfica.
Fulham Confirm Marco Silva’s Departure as Benfica Move Looms
The 48-year-old departs following another solid Premier League campaign in which Fulham secured an 11th-place finish for the second consecutive season. During his tenure, Silva played a pivotal role in re-establishing the west London club as a stable top-flight side after guiding them to promotion from the Championship in his first season in charge.
Under Silva's leadership, Fulham achieved several significant milestones, including reaching the Carabao Cup semi-finals during the 2023/24 campaign, where they were narrowly defeated by Liverpool over two legs. He also oversaw the club’s highest-ever Premier League points total of 54 and matched their record number of league victories in a season with 15 wins.
Fulham owner Shahid Khan paid tribute to Silva's contribution and acknowledged that the club had anticipated the possibility of change.
"Fulham and Marco were an excellent fit for five seasons, but change is inevitable in football, and we have prepared accordingly for this moment," Khan said.
The club had hoped to retain Silva and reportedly offered him a new contract. However, the opportunity to return to Portugal and manage Benfica appears to have proved decisive.
The Lisbon-based club are seeking a new manager following the expected departure of José Mourinho to Real Madrid. Benfica's third-place finish in the Portuguese league means they will compete in the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds next season, potentially offering Silva the European football he was unable to secure with Fulham.
In a heartfelt farewell message published on Fulham’s official website, Silva expressed his gratitude to the club's supporters.
"From my first day here, I asked you to stand with us, and that is exactly what you have done throughout these five years," Silva wrote.
"We achieved a great deal together, and my staff and I always felt your incredible support. It is something I will never forget.
"Fulham will always remain in my heart, and sooner or later I will return to Craven Cottage."
Silva arrived at Fulham in July 2021 following the club’s relegation from the Premier League under Scott Parker. After a challenging period away from management following spells at Everton and Watford, he revitalised his reputation by guiding Fulham to the Championship title before establishing the club as a competitive Premier League outfit.
Prior to his time at Craven Cottage, Silva managed Hull City, Everton, Watford and Olympiacos, while also enjoying successful spells with Estoril and Sporting CP in Portugal.
His departure means he will avoid facing former club Hull City in the Premier League next season following their promotion via the Championship play-offs.
Attention now turns to Fulham's search for a successor. Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna and former Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur head coach Thomas Frank have already emerged as early contenders for the vacancy.
Khan remains confident that the club will attract high-quality candidates.
"Fulham is an extraordinarily attractive destination for an incoming head coach," he said. "We will appoint a replacement in a timely but deliberate manner."
The end of Silva's tenure marks the conclusion of one of the most successful managerial periods in Fulham's recent history, leaving behind a stronger and more established Premier League club than the one he inherited five years ago.
