Former Celtic manager and football pundit John Barnes has revealed that he recently underwent treatment for prostate cancer, sharing his experience in the hope of encouraging more men to prioritise their health.
Former Celtic Manager John Barnes Opens Up About Private Prostate Cancer Battle
The 62-year-old, who is now in good health following successful surgery to remove his prostate, disclosed that he sought medical advice after persistent encouragement from his children. That decision ultimately led to an early diagnosis and life-saving treatment.
Speaking to Times Radio, Barnes stressed the importance of men overcoming their reluctance to discuss health concerns and seeking professional help when necessary.
"Men have to bite the bullet, swallow their pride and admit when they have problems and speak about them," Barnes said.
"It's a positive thing that these conversations are now happening more openly."
The former Liverpool star and ESPN pundit confirmed that his recovery has gone well and that his health remains stable.
"I'm fine. I have my PSA tests and everything is okay," he explained.
Barnes also acknowledged that many men continue to find prostate cancer and related health issues difficult to discuss, often due to concerns about how it may affect their sense of masculinity.
"A lot of men don't want to admit it or go through the necessary checks because they feel it somehow makes them less of a man," he said.
"But that's simply not true. You're still the same person, and most importantly, you're still here. That's what matters."
His comments come amid growing awareness of prostate cancer after fellow Liverpool legends Sir Kenny Dalglish and Kevin Keegan also recently revealed their own diagnoses.
By sharing his story publicly, Barnes hopes to help break down the stigma surrounding men's health issues and encourage others to seek medical advice at the earliest opportunity.
His message serves as a reminder of the importance of regular health checks and early detection, which can significantly improve treatment outcomes and save lives.
