AS Roma have confirmed that Claudio Ranieri has stepped down from his role as a special adviser to the club’s ownership following a disagreement with head coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

In a statement released on Friday, the Serie A side announced the end of their working relationship with the experienced Italian.

“AS Roma confirms the relationship with Claudio Ranieri has ended,” the club said. “We would like to thank Claudio for his significant contributions. He guided the team through a very challenging period, and we remain grateful for his efforts.”

Dispute with Gasperini Leads to Exit

Ranieri, 74, had taken on the advisory role after stepping down as Roma manager at the end of last season. Despite overseeing a strong late run, he narrowly missed out on UEFA Champions League qualification, with the club finishing just one point short.

Following his departure from the dugout, Ranieri remained closely involved behind the scenes and played a key role in appointing Gasperini as his successor.

However, tensions emerged after Ranieri publicly criticised Gasperini’s comments regarding Roma’s transfer dealings. The disagreement ultimately led to a breakdown in their working relationship, with the club choosing to back the current head coach.

Roma Reaffirm Support for Gasperini

Roma made their position clear in a follow-up statement, emphasising their commitment to stability and long-term progress under Gasperini’s leadership.

“As we look to the future, our direction is clear. The club is strong, with solid leadership and a defined vision,” the statement read.

“AS Roma will always come first. We have full confidence in the path ahead under Gian Piero Gasperini, with the shared objective of growth, improvement and delivering results worthy of our history.”

Season Outlook and Ranieri’s Impact

Roma currently sit sixth in the Serie A table with five matches remaining, five points adrift of the Champions League qualification places.

Ranieri had returned to manage his hometown club in November 2024, coming out of retirement at a time when Roma were languishing in 12th position. Under his guidance, the team produced an impressive turnaround, losing just once in the second half of the season to secure a fifth-place finish.

Although his advisory tenure has now come to an end, Ranieri’s influence during a critical period for the club remains widely acknowledged.
