Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is reported to be in stable condition after collapsing during his side’s World Cup warm-up match against Ukraine.
Christian Eriksen Stable After Collapse During Denmark Friendly as Midfielder Reflects on Previous Cardiac Emergency
The incident prompted immediate medical attention on the pitch before the match was subsequently abandoned.
The episode inevitably brought renewed attention to Eriksen’s widely documented cardiac emergency during Denmark’s opening match of UEFA Euro 2020 against Finland in June 2021.
Following that incident, Eriksen later revealed that he had briefly lost consciousness before medical staff successfully restored his heartbeat and stabilised his condition.
Speaking in a 2022 interview about the experience, Eriksen reflected on the moment he regained awareness.
“I was gone from this world for five minutes until they got my heartbeat back.
Then I woke up with people around me and felt the pressure on my chest, trying to get my breathing back.”
The Danish midfielder explained that his initial concern was understanding what had happened physically following the emergency.
“At that time I had no idea what happened. Then it goes through my head — did something happen with my legs, did I break my back?
Can I lift my leg up? All small things I was trying to do to understand what happened.”
Eriksen also recalled learning in the ambulance how long he had been unconscious.
“Someone said ‘five minutes’ and that was the first time I had heard how serious it had been.”
Despite the life-threatening nature of the incident, Eriksen later expressed gratitude for the speed and professionalism of those who responded.
“I am very lucky and I have told them face to face I am very happy they did what they did otherwise I would not be here.”
Return to Football After Medical Treatment
Following the 2021 cardiac incident, Eriksen underwent treatment and was fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), a device designed to monitor and respond to certain heart rhythm conditions.
His football career resumed after receiving medical clearance, allowing him to return to top-level competition.
Discussing his return at the time, Eriksen said:
“I don’t really have any scared feelings about it. I don’t feel my ICD, so if it gets hit I know it is safe enough.
I feel like me so don’t see a reason why I can’t get back to the same level.”
He also spoke about the emotions involved in returning to competitive football.
“I think it will get more and more obvious the closer it gets to being in a real game — being in a stadium, being in a game, you get all the emotion and adrenaline from that.”
Team Doctor Provides Update
Following the latest incident during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine, Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen provided an update on Eriksen’s condition.
“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch himself.
As I see it, the pacemaker gave a shock, as it is supposed to. He was briefly out, but regained consciousness very quickly and we were quickly in contact with him.
Now he needs to be examined further at the hospital to find out what caused the incident.”
Boesen added that Eriksen had remained in contact and wanted to reassure his teammates.
“Christian is doing well, and he asked me to say hello to all the players and say that he was okay.”
The Danish Football Association later issued a statement confirming:
“Christian Eriksen is conscious and feeling well according to the circumstances. The match has been called off.”
Further medical assessment is expected before any decisions are made regarding Eriksen’s return to football activity.
