Chelsea have suffered another significant setback after scans confirmed the severity of the hamstring injury sustained by Brazilian teenager Estevão Willian, with the 18-year-old ruled out for the remainder of the club season and facing a race against time to be fit for the 2026 World Cup.

Estevão was forced off just 17 minutes into last weekend’s 1–0 defeat to Manchester United after pulling up while sprinting through on goal. Initial concerns have now been confirmed, with reports indicating a serious hamstring strain following medical assessments.

According to The Athletic, the Brazilian has suffered a grade four hamstring injury, an issue that will sideline him for Chelsea’s remaining four Premier League fixtures. He is also expected to miss the FA Cup final, should the Blues progress to that stage.

The injury compounds what has already been a turbulent period for the club, coinciding with the dismissal of head coach Liam Rosenior on the same day the diagnosis was revealed.

Emotional Reaction and Season Cut Short

Rosenior had earlier disclosed the emotional impact of the injury, revealing that the young winger was left in tears after being substituted.

“It looks like it’s his hamstring and that has happened in a moment when he’s running through on goal for a one-v-one chance – he pulls his hamstring in that moment. I hope Este comes back sooner rather than later,” Rosenior said.

However, the prognosis suggests Estevão’s debut season at Stamford Bridge has effectively come to an end. The highly rated youngster joined from Palmeiras at the start of the campaign and has impressed, registering eight goals and four assists.

One of the standout moments of his season came in the UEFA Champions League, where he delivered a superb performance in a 3–0 victory over Barcelona.

Chelsea Injury Woes Deepen

Estevão’s absence adds to Chelsea’s growing list of injury concerns, with key players such as Reece James, João Pedro and Cole Palmer also sidelined.

James has been unavailable since March due to a hamstring problem, while others across the league have faced similarly lengthy recoveries. Manchester United’s Patrick Dorgu has been out since January, and Tottenham Hotspur’s Rodrigo Bentancur only recently returned to training after an extended spell on the sidelines.

World Cup Participation in Doubt

Beyond club concerns, the injury has cast serious doubt over Estevão’s availability for Brazil at the upcoming World Cup.

The teenager has been a regular inclusion in the national team under newly appointed manager Carlo Ancelotti. While sources close to the player have suggested he is expected to recover in time for the tournament, hamstring injuries of this severity typically require around eight weeks for full rehabilitation.

With Brazil’s opening group-stage match scheduled for 13 June — just over seven weeks away — uncertainty remains over whether Estevão will be able to prove his fitness in time.

Ancelotti is set to finalise his squad by 30 May, and it remains unclear whether he would be willing to include a player who may not be fully match-fit ahead of the tournament.
