Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick expressed his frustration with the officiating following his side’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, criticising what he described as inconsistent penalty decisions that proved costly.
Carrick Frustrated by Penalty Decisions as Manchester United Held by Bournemouth
United appeared to be in control of the match at 2-1 when Amad Diallo went down inside the penalty area under pressure. Despite appeals, a VAR review concluded that there was insufficient contact to award a penalty.
Moments later, however, referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot after a similar challenge involving Harry Maguire and Bournemouth forward Evanilson. The decision ultimately allowed Bournemouth to equalise, turning the game on its head.
Carrick did not hide his disbelief at the contrasting calls.
“I believe both incidents were penalties. It was a huge moment in the game, and everything seemed to unravel from there,” he said.
“If the referee considers one to be a penalty, then the other must be as well. I simply cannot understand how one is given and the other is not.”
The failure to award United a spot-kick denied them the opportunity to extend their lead to 3-1, and the situation was further compounded when Maguire was later sent off, leaving the visitors to battle with ten men for a significant period.
Despite the setback, Carrick praised his players for their resilience and composure under pressure.
“To play with ten men for that length of time, make adjustments, and still see out a difficult ending was very encouraging,” he added.
“The substitutes came on and contributed well, and the team handled the closing stages with real determination.”
The result sees Manchester United head into the international break in third place on 55 points, trailing league leaders Arsenal by 15 points and sitting six behind Manchester City.
Carrick, who took charge on an interim basis in January following the departure of Ruben Amorim, is confident the break will not disrupt his side’s progress.
“The players will go away for international duty, which always creates a bit of a pause, but we will be fully prepared for our next match against Leeds United,” he said.
