Canada women's national soccer team secured a commanding 4-1 victory over Colombia women's national football team in their opening fixture of the SheBelieves Cup on Sunday, ending a five-match losing streak in international competition.
Canada Cruise Past Colombia in SheBelieves Cup Opener
Goals from Vanessa Gilles, Janine Sonis, Sydney Collins and Nichelle Prince ensured a confident start to the tournament for Canada, who will next face the United States in Columbus, Ohio.
Gilles Sets the Tone
Canada took the lead in the 31st minute when Gilles rose highest to head home from a corner delivered by Sonis, establishing early control in a competitive encounter.
Sonis doubled the advantage in the 67th minute from the penalty spot, dispatching a composed, arcing effort into the left corner beyond Colombia goalkeeper Katerin Tapia.
Collins extended the lead six minutes later, finishing clinically to put the result beyond serious doubt.
Physical Contest Boils Over
Colombia responded in the 81st minute when Leicy Santos converted a penalty past Canada goalkeeper Kailee Sheridan, briefly offering hope of a late resurgence.
However, Prince sealed the victory in the 90th minute, rounding off an emphatic performance.
The match was fiercely contested throughout, with seven yellow cards issued. Colombia’s Gisela Robledo received two bookings, resulting in a red card as tensions escalated in the latter stages.
Canada’s convincing display not only halted their recent run of defeats but also provides renewed momentum ahead of a high-profile meeting with the tournament hosts later this week.
