Brazil have suffered a significant setback ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after first-choice right-back Wesley was ruled out through injury.
Brazil Suffer Major Blow as Rising Star Wesley Ruled Out of 2026 World Cup
The 22-year-old defender sustained a serious groin injury during Brazil’s final warm-up match against Egypt on Saturday, dealing an untimely blow to Carlo Ancelotti’s preparations just days before the tournament begins.
Brazil secured a 2–1 victory in the fixture, with Bruno Guimarães and Endrick finding the net. However, the result was overshadowed by concern for Wesley, who was forced off in tears after only 17 minutes.
Medical assessments conducted on Sunday later confirmed that the defender had suffered a torn left adductor muscle, ending his hopes of featuring at this year’s World Cup.
The news arrives less than a week before Brazil open their campaign against Morocco on 13 June and adds to a growing list of injury concerns within the squad.
Major Defensive Setback for Brazil
Wesley’s absence represents a major loss for Brazil, having emerged as one of the most important figures in Ancelotti’s tactical plans.
The AS Roma defender had established himself as the team’s preferred right-back and was expected to play a key role throughout the competition.
Known for his pace, attacking contribution and defensive reliability, Wesley also offered versatility by operating on either side of the back line, making him one of Brazil’s most valuable young talents.
His rise over the past year has been particularly remarkable. Born in Maranhão, Wesley became the first footballer from the state to secure a place in a Brazil World Cup squad.
His selection followed an intense campaign in which he featured in 69 competitive matches since his last extended break — more than any other Brazil international during that period.
The injury now leaves Brazil’s coaching staff with difficult decisions to make just days before the tournament begins.
Ancelotti Responds to Wesley Injury
Speaking before the full extent of the injury became clear, Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti said:
“It would be a shame to lose Wesley. But first we have to wait for the tests. In that case, we’ll have good players to replace him.”
Subsequent examinations confirmed the worst fears.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) also issued a message of support following the diagnosis.
“The CBF regrets the injury. Wesley is a player much loved by the squad and will always be considered part of this team as it seeks to win its sixth World Cup title.”
In response, Brazil moved quickly to adjust their squad by naming Atalanta midfielder Éderson as a replacement in the final 26-man group.
The CBF confirmed that Éderson would join the squad in the United States on Monday. The midfielder, who recently agreed a move to Manchester United, now receives an unexpected opportunity to become part of Brazil’s World Cup journey.
Veteran defender Danilo is expected to fill the right-back position when Brazil face Morocco. Although his experience could prove crucial, replacing Wesley’s energy and attacking influence will be no easy task.
What Wesley’s Absence Means for Brazil
The injury comes at a difficult moment for one of the tournament favourites.
Supporters reacted with disappointment across social media, with messages of encouragement pouring in for the young defender.
For Wesley, attention now turns to recovery. Medical expectations suggest he could be sidelined for between 10 and 15 days. While that timeline rules him out of the World Cup, it may allow him to return in time for Roma’s pre-season preparations.
Despite the setback, Wesley’s progress over the past year remains one of Brazilian football’s standout stories.
Since making his international debut in March 2025, he has quickly established himself as a regular starter under Ancelotti. His move to Roma also proved successful, with impressive performances in Serie A earning wider recognition on the international stage.
Brazil will now have to continue their World Cup campaign without one of their fastest-rising stars — a loss that removes an important piece from Ancelotti’s plans before the tournament has even begun.
