Boca Juniors Coach Miguel Ángel Russo Dies Aged 69 After Long Cancer Battle

Boca Juniors have announced with deep sorrow that their head coach, Miguel Ángel Russo, has died at the age of 69 following a long battle with cancer.

Russo was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017 but continued to work in football throughout his illness. He returned to Boca Juniors for a third spell in charge in June, overseeing the team at the Club World Cup before his health began to deteriorate.

In recent months, Russo stepped back from day-to-day management duties and was cared for at home, although he remained in close contact with his assistants and coaching staff.

“Boca Juniors announces the passing of Miguel Ángel Russo with profound sadness,” the club posted on social media.
“Miguel leaves an indelible mark on our institution and will always be an example of joy, warmth, and dedication. We are with his family and loved ones in this time of grief. Farewell, dear Miguel!”

A decorated career at Boca and beyond

Russo enjoyed three spells as Boca Juniors coach, most notably leading the club to Copa Libertadores glory in 2007. He also won the Argentine league title in 2020, cementing his place as one of the most respected figures in the club’s modern history.

Beyond Boca, Russo managed some of Argentina’s other biggest clubs, including San Lorenzo and Racing Club. His managerial career also spanned multiple countries, with spells at Universidad de Chile, Salamanca (Spain), Morelia (Mexico), Millonarios (Colombia), Alianza Lima (Peru), Cerro Porteño (Paraguay), and Al Nassr (Saudi Arabia).

Before embarking on his coaching career, Russo was a distinguished midfielder for Estudiantes, where he made over 400 appearances and won two national titles.
