Mikel Arteta revealed he drew inspiration from Arsenal’s recent north London derby triumph to motivate his players during their hard-fought victory over Chelsea FC.

A week after a commanding 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal maintained their momentum by defeating Chelsea to move five points clear at the summit of the Premier League.

Goals from William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, both from set-pieces, either side of a Piero Hincapie own goal, ensured the Gunners responded emphatically to Manchester City’s victory over Leeds the previous day.

Half-Time Reminder Sparks Response

Arsenal had dominated the opening period but were pegged back to 1-1 just before the interval when Hincapie inadvertently diverted a header into his own net — mirroring the half-time scoreline against Spurs seven days earlier.

Arteta used that parallel to galvanise his players during the break.

“We started the game so well, the first half was very, very dominant,” he said. “I think the margin should have been bigger. But we were 1-1 at half-time. Game on.

“I reminded them that we were in exactly the same position against Spurs seven days ago in that dressing room. I said, ‘Look what happened in the second half — so we’re going to do it again’.

“But probably we were going to have to go through some difficult patches to earn the right to win the game. We certainly did that.”

While Arsenal were less dominant after the restart than they had been against Tottenham, they nevertheless found a decisive edge when it mattered.

Late Drama Despite Numerical Advantage

Chelsea were reduced to 10 men for the final 20 minutes after Pedro Neto received a second yellow card. However, the numerical advantage did not translate into complete control for the hosts.

Instead, it was Chelsea who pressed forward in search of a late equaliser, creating a nervy conclusion at the Emirates Stadium.

Deep into stoppage time, a dangerous cross from Alejandro Garnacho arced towards the far corner, threatening to snatch a point for the visitors.

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya reacted superbly, springing to his left to claw the ball away and preserve the lead.

“David is one of our leaders, without a doubt,” Arteta added. “He is a goalkeeper who knows how to maintain his focus and decide a football match when you need him.

“Sometimes he does not participate at all, and then in one action you have to be there — and that is very, very difficult to do.

“The save he made in the final moment — it was a cross, not a shot, but it ended up being an unbelievable save.

“I had the right angle and my heart almost stopped, but David’s hand was there to bring it back to life.”

Arsenal’s ability to navigate adversity once again underlined their growing maturity, as Arteta’s side strengthened their grip at the top of the table with another statement derby victory.
