Arsenal moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table despite being held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by a determined Nottingham Forest side at the City Ground on Saturday.

The Gunners had been presented with the opportunity to extend their lead to nine points after Manchester City suffered a 2-0 defeat away to local rivals Manchester United earlier in the day. However, Mikel Arteta’s side were unable to capitalise, delivering a subdued first-half performance as Forest stood firm to earn a valuable point in their fight for survival.

Despite the stalemate, Arsenal remain firmly positioned to end their 22-year wait for a league title, maintaining a healthy cushion at the summit of the table.

Forest manager Sean Dyche had publicly criticised his team following their FA Cup exit to League Two side Wrexham last weekend, questioning their intensity and commitment. His words appeared to have the desired effect, as the hosts responded with a disciplined and combative display that lifted them five points clear of the relegation zone.

Manchester City’s failure to mount sustained pressure on the leaders has aided Arsenal’s cause, with the champions now winless in four league matches since the start of the year. However, successive goalless draws against Liverpool and Forest have prevented Arteta’s side from building a more commanding advantage.

Third-placed Aston Villa could reduce the gap at the top to four points should they overcome Everton on Sunday.

Arsenal struggled to assert themselves in the opening period and failed to register a single shot on target before the interval. It was only after Arteta turned to his bench that the visitors began to exert greater control.

Leandro Trossard was introduced at half-time, with Bukayo Saka, Mikel Merino and Gabriel Jesus all entering the contest before the hour mark as Arsenal sought to inject urgency and creativity.

Saka came closest to breaking the deadlock, directing a looping header from Declan Rice’s cross goalwards, only for Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels to produce an outstanding save. Merino later squandered a promising opportunity, failing to convert Rice’s inviting free-kick delivery.

In the end, Arsenal were forced to settle for a point, but their defensive resilience once again proved decisive. The clean sheet marked their 11th in 22 league matches, ensuring they edged further clear at the top despite an off-colour attacking display.
