The 2026 Africa Cup of Nations final was plunged into chaos on Sunday, 18 January, after Senegal temporarily walked off the pitch in protest at a highly controversial late penalty awarded to hosts Morocco.
AFCON 2026 Final Descends into Chaos as Senegal Walk Off Pitch After Controversial Morocco Penalty
Furious accusations of injustice followed the decision, which came deep into stoppage time of a tense final that ended in dramatic and deeply disputed circumstances. Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw ordered his players to leave the field after referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a spot-kick in the 98th minute, judging El Hadji Malick Diouf to have fouled Brahim Díaz inside the area.
The decision sparked immediate outrage among Senegal’s players and coaching staff, particularly as it came just minutes after Senegal believed they had scored a decisive goal. Ismaïla Sarr had bundled the ball into the net following a header from Idrissa Gueye that struck the woodwork, but the celebrations were abruptly halted when the referee ruled out the goal for a foul in the build-up.
Senegal’s anger intensified when VAR intervened moments later to advise a review of Díaz going down under pressure from Diouf. After consulting the pitchside monitor, Ndala pointed to the spot, prompting heated protests from both teams and confrontations across the pitch.
Players Leave the Field Amid Protests
As tempers flared, Thiaw instructed his players to walk down the tunnel in protest, leaving the match suspended for more than 10 minutes. Sadio Mané remained on the touchline throughout the stoppage, refusing to re-enter the field during the standoff.
Eventually, the Lions of Teranga returned for the penalty to be taken. Díaz stepped up but failed to convert, gently chipping the ball straight into the hands of former Chelsea goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, who had earlier been booked for approaching the Real Madrid forward during the delay. The missed penalty proved to be the final action of regulation time in a final dominated by contentious refereeing decisions.
Despite the missed spot-kick, the atmosphere inside the stadium remained highly charged. Díaz was later substituted in extra time and was visibly emotional as he watched Senegal finally take the lead. Papa Gueye sealed the decisive moment with a stunning strike, putting Senegal ahead in a dramatic conclusion to the final.
Senegal Raised Concerns Before the Final
The controversy was further fuelled by comments made before kick-off by the Senegalese Football Federation, who had already expressed serious concerns regarding the organisation of the final. In a formal statement, the federation called on CAF and the local organising committee to address what it described as inadequate security arrangements, substandard hotel accommodation, limited ticket allocation and restricted stadium access for Senegalese supporters.
Senegal also refused to train at the Mohamed VI Football Complex, the regular training base for Morocco’s national team, citing concerns over competitive fairness and accusing the hosts of gaining an undue advantage.
AFCON has a history of high-profile controversies, but the dramatic scenes in Rabat have reignited debates around officiating standards and tournament integrity. Despite the heated confrontations, remarkably no red cards were shown, although several yellow cards were issued during the melee.
The final will be remembered less for the football and more for the controversy that overshadowed what should have been one of African football’s showpiece occasions.
