Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain took control of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final ties with commanding first-leg victories over FC Barcelona and Liverpool F.C. respectively on Wednesday night.

At the Camp Nou, Barcelona were reduced to 10 men after Pau Cubarsí was sent off for a foul on Giuliano Simeone, who was through on goal. Julián Álvarez converted the resulting free-kick before Alexander Sørloth added a second to give Atlético a 2–0 advantage heading into the return leg.

Barcelona pushed for a response but struggled to break down Diego Simeone’s well-organised side, leaving the Spanish champions with a difficult task in Madrid next week to overturn the deficit.

Meanwhile in Paris, PSG delivered a dominant performance at the Parc des Princes, defeating Liverpool 2–0 through goals from Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Liverpool F.C., who struggled to impose themselves throughout, were consistently under pressure and failed to create clear chances against a confident PSG side managed by Luis Enrique.

Doué opened the scoring with a deflected effort before Kvaratskhelia produced a superb solo finish to double the advantage, leaving the French champions firmly in control of the tie ahead of the second leg at Anfield.

Both Atlético Madrid and PSG now hold significant advantages heading into the return fixtures, with Barcelona and Liverpool facing uphill battles to remain in the competition.
