Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has expressed confidence that Julián Álvarez will be fit to feature in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final against Arsenal next week.

Álvarez played a crucial role in Atletico’s 1–1 draw on Wednesday evening, converting a second-half penalty to cancel out Viktor Gyökeres’s earlier spot-kick, which had given Arsenal the lead before the interval.

However, the Argentina international was forced off with 13 minutes remaining after sustaining an ankle injury following a challenge from Eberechi Eze. The forward appeared to be in visible discomfort as he left the pitch, although he was later seen moving around after the final whistle.

Atletico may also be monitoring the fitness of Giuliano Simeone and Alexander Sørloth, both of whom picked up knocks during the match.

Providing an update on the trio, Simeone struck an optimistic tone regarding their availability.

“Knowing them, they will certainly be ready for Tuesday,” he said. “I do not expect anyone to miss the match.

“They may be experiencing some physical discomfort at the moment — Giuliano from a knock, Julián from the fall in midfield, and Sørloth with a hamstring issue — but I am confident they will all be available.”

Atletico are scheduled to face Valencia CF in La Liga on Saturday before turning their attention to the decisive second leg against Arsenal next Tuesday.
