Mexican social media influencer Cesar Gastelum was shot dead while livestreaming with friends outside a fast-food restaurant in Culiacan, the capital of Mexico's violence-plagued Sinaloa state.
Authorities said the attack occurred on Tuesday as Gastelum and two friends were broadcasting live on TikTok, where the influencer had amassed nearly 600,000 followers through comedy and lifestyle content.
The group had reportedly dressed as delivery riders as part of a social media challenge when two men arrived on a motorcycle.
Video footage from the livestream appeared to show one of the attackers opening fire at close range, fatally shooting Gastelum in the head before fleeing the scene.
The livestream ended abruptly after the shooting.
Although the original video was later removed, clips quickly spread across social media.

SECURITY OPERATION LAUNCHED

Security officials confirmed Gastelum's death and said police and military personnel immediately launched a major operation to locate those responsible.
Forensic investigators were deployed to examine the crime scene near the Sinaloa state prosecutor's office.
Initial police reports mistakenly identified the victim as a delivery worker before authorities confirmed he was the well-known TikTok content creator.
Local media reported Gastelum was about 25 years old.

The killing highlights the deteriorating security situation in Culiacan, which has remained at the centre of violent conflict between rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel following internal power struggles that intensified after the arrests and extraditions of several cartel leaders.

Security analysts say the ongoing conflict has increasingly affected public spaces, making everyday activities dangerous for residents.

INFLUENCERS INCREASINGLY TARGETED

Gastelum's death follows several high-profile killings of Mexican social media personalities in recent years.
In May 2025, beauty influencer Valeria Márquez, aged 23, was shot dead while livestreaming from the beauty salon where she worked in Zapopan, Jalisco.
Her killing shocked Mexico and sparked widespread concern over the vulnerability of online personalities.
Authorities later arrested Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, also known as "El R-1," whom investigators linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Officials accused him of helping organise Márquez's murder and financing the assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo later that year.
Several other influencers have also been murdered across Mexico amid allegations that some maintained connections with organised criminal groups, although authorities have not suggested Gastelum had any such links.

The latest killing has renewed debate over the safety of influencers who frequently broadcast their locations live to large online audiences.
Security experts warn that livestreaming can expose creators to criminals by revealing their exact whereabouts in real time.
