Binance has reported a potential $6.3 billion cryptocurrency hack, possibly involving an engineer’s compromised laptop that enabled unauthorised withdrawals. The exchange says about half of the affected assets have been frozen with help from other platforms and has promised to cover all losses. Cybersecurity firms suspect a North Korean hacking group known as TraderTraitor, although Binance has not confirmed the link. The incident has triggered cryptocurrency price declines and renewed concerns about digital asset security.
binance reports potential $6.3 billion cryptocurrency hack as north korean group comes under suspicion
Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has reported a major security incident involving approximately $6.3 billion worth of digital assets, in what could become one of the largest cryptocurrency hacks in history.
The company announced on Thursday that around half of the affected assets had been frozen with assistance from other cryptocurrency platforms. Binance also assured customers that it would cover all losses resulting from the incident.
Initial investigations suggest that the attack may have involved an engineer’s compromised laptop. According to the exchange, the security breach allowed an attacker to gain unauthorised access and withdraw digital assets.
Two cryptocurrency analytics companies, TRM Labs and Chainalysis, have linked the incident to a North Korean hacking group known as TraderTraitor. However, Binance has not confirmed the suspected connection and says it is working with law enforcement agencies to identify those responsible.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the security of cryptocurrency exchanges, which hold enormous amounts of digital assets and remain attractive targets for organised cybercriminal groups.
HOW THE SECURITY BREACH MAY HAVE HAPPENED
Early checks by Binance indicate that the incident may have started with an engineer’s laptop being compromised.
A compromised device can provide attackers with access to sensitive information, internal systems or credentials that may allow them to bypass normal security protections. If an attacker gains access to systems used by employees, they may be able to carry out transactions without the organisation’s authorisation.
Binance said the suspected breach allowed unauthorised withdrawals, although the full technical details have not yet been established.
The company is investigating how the attacker gained access, what security weaknesses may have been exploited and how the stolen assets were moved.
The findings will be important in determining whether the incident resulted from stolen login credentials, malicious software, inadequate access controls or another form of cyberattack.
NORTH KOREAN HACKING GROUP SUSPECTED
TRM Labs and Chainalysis have attributed the incident to TraderTraitor, a hacking group associated with North Korea.
TRM Labs said several features of the Binance attack resemble previous cyberattacks linked to North Korean hackers, including the $1.5 billion theft from cryptocurrency exchange Bybit in 2025.
Ari Redbord, TRM Labs’ global head of policy, described the Binance incident as a major turning point for the cryptocurrency industry, noting that the scale of the affected assets was unlike previous attacks.
Chainalysis also said it had high confidence in the suspected North Korean connection. Its head of research, Eric Jardine, urged cryptocurrency exchanges to remain vigilant because of the large amounts of money held on their platforms.
North Korean-linked hacking groups have repeatedly been accused of targeting cryptocurrency businesses and financial institutions. Stolen digital assets can be difficult to recover because criminals may move them through different wallets and services in an attempt to hide their origins.
However, the attribution of a cyberattack requires technical investigation, and Binance has not publicly confirmed that TraderTraitor was responsible.
OTHER CRYPTOCURRENCY COMPANIES FREEZE BILLIONS
Following the incident, several cryptocurrency companies moved to restrict access to assets believed to be connected to the attack.
Tether and Circle announced that they had frozen approximately $2.4 billion in assets combined.
Tether, which issues the USDT stablecoin, said it had frozen around $1.6 billion connected to the potential Binance hack. Its chief executive, Paolo Ardoino, said protecting the cryptocurrency industry and its partners remained a priority.
Circle, the issuer and co-creator of USDC, said it had frozen more than $800 million in assets linked to the incident. Chief executive Jeremy Allaire confirmed that the company was closely monitoring reports of the security breach.
These actions demonstrate how cooperation between cryptocurrency platforms can help prevent stolen assets from being moved or converted. Unlike traditional bank transfers, cryptocurrency transactions can move across digital wallets and platforms, making it difficult to recover funds once they have been transferred.
Freezing assets can therefore provide an important opportunity for investigators to trace transactions and prevent criminals from accessing some of the stolen funds.
World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency company linked to US President Donald Trump and his family, also said it had worked with partners to freeze funds connected to the incident.
BINANCE DISABLES WITHDRAWALS AS INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
Binance co-chief executive Yi He thanked cryptocurrency issuers and other platforms for helping to freeze the affected assets.
She announced that withdrawals had been temporarily disabled until the company could confirm that its systems and operating environment were secure.
The restriction is intended to prevent further unauthorised transactions while the exchange investigates the incident and strengthens its security arrangements.
Binance also said it was working closely with law enforcement partners to establish the identities of those responsible and bring them to justice.
The incident concerns Binance.com, the company's main international exchange. Binance.US, which provides cryptocurrency trading services specifically for customers in the United States, said it was not affected.
Other major platforms, including Coinbase, also confirmed that their services were not affected, although the company said it was monitoring developments.
BITCOIN AND OTHER CRYPTOCURRENCIES FALL
News of the potential hack triggered a decline in the prices of major cryptocurrencies.
Bitcoin fell by more than four per cent following alerts about the security incident, while Ethereum and Solana also recorded sharp losses.
The market reaction reflects concerns that a major security breach could weaken confidence in cryptocurrency exchanges and increase uncertainty among investors.
Large-scale hacks can affect the wider digital asset market because traders may fear further attacks, withdraw their holdings or reduce their exposure to cryptocurrencies.
The incident also highlights the importance of trust in cryptocurrency platforms. Customers depend on exchanges to protect their digital assets, secure internal systems and respond quickly when suspicious transactions occur.
A MAJOR TEST FOR CRYPTOCURRENCY SECURITY
Binance was founded in 2017 and has grown into the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, with more than 300 million registered users, according to the company. It has also faced regulatory scrutiny in several countries over its operations and compliance with financial regulations.
The scale of the latest incident could intensify questions about how cryptocurrency exchanges protect customer funds and manage access to their internal systems.
Although Binance has promised to cover all losses, the incident raises broader concerns about the risks associated with storing digital assets on centralised platforms.
The ongoing investigation will need to establish how the attacker gained access, how much cryptocurrency was successfully stolen and whether all affected assets can be recovered or frozen.
For now, cooperation between exchanges, cryptocurrency issuers and law enforcement agencies will remain essential to tracing the funds and identifying those responsible. The incident is also a warning to cryptocurrency businesses that security weaknesses involving even one employee's device can potentially expose enormous amounts of digital wealth.
