Two suspected terrorists died thwarting an explosive attack near a Kampala Catholic shrine during a national holiday.

Ugandan military authorities have confirmed that two individuals died before they could carry out what is suspected to be an explosive attack near a prominent Catholic shrine in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. According to an official statement released by the military on Tuesday, security forces successfully “intercepted and neutralized two armed terrorists” in Munyonyo, a suburban area of Kampala known for its residential neighborhoods and proximity to important religious sites.

The two deceased individuals were identified as a man and a woman who were traveling together on a motorcycle, with the woman seated as the passenger. As a team of security personnel pursued and closed in on the suspects, the female passenger appeared to detonate an explosive device. This caused a blast that resulted in the immediate death of both the man driving the motorcycle and the woman, according to Kituuma Rusoke, the police spokesman. Rusoke was cautious not to release further details at this stage, emphasizing that a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether other accomplices may be involved or if there are further threats.

This incident took place on a significant public holiday in Uganda, which commemorates the memory of a group of Christian martyrs. These martyrs were executed between the years 1885 and 1887 by order of a local king who opposed the spread of Christianity in the region. The annual remembrance attracts large numbers of pilgrims who travel to a different site near Kampala to honor these martyrs. This year, as part of the ceremonies, dignitaries from across Uganda gathered at the site, including the country’s President, Yoweri Museveni, who was present to lead the mass and address attendees.

Explosive attacks in Uganda are considered rare, but the government has periodically issued warnings about extremist militants who remain opposed to President Museveni’s long-standing administration. These militant groups sometimes aim to destabilize the country through such attacks, especially during important national events or religious holidays, which can draw large crowds. The authorities have been vigilant in tracking down and neutralizing potential threats to maintain security and public safety throughout the country.
