Panama-Flagged Cargo Ship Sinks Off India With 24 Crew On Board
A Panama-flagged cargo ship has sunk off the eastern coast of India, prompting a major search-and-rescue operation by Indian authorities.
The vessel, Ocean Winner, had 24 crew members on board when it went down, according to India's Coast Guard. At least two crew members were reportedly rescued, while the search for the remaining sailors continued.
CREW MEMBERS FROM THREE COUNTRIES
Indian officials said the crew included 20 Chinese nationals, three Myanmar citizens and one Bangladeshi national.
The cause of the sinking remains unclear.
Authorities have launched a joint operation involving the Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy to locate and rescue any survivors.
VESSEL SANK FAR FROM ODISHA COAST
Officials said the ship was located about 240 nautical miles (444 kilometres) off the coast of Odisha when the incident occurred.
Local authorities in Paradip said rescue teams were being mobilised, while nearby vessels were alerted to assist with the search.
The operation is expected to be challenging because of the distance from the coast and the uncertainty surrounding the location and condition of the remaining crew.
SHIP WAS CARRYING IRON ORE
According to vessel-tracking data, the Ocean Winner had been carrying iron ore from Paradip port in Odisha to Singapore.
Investigators will likely examine the vessel's condition, weather and sea conditions, cargo and navigation records as they seek to determine why the ship sank.
The immediate priority remains locating the missing crew members and bringing them safely back to shore.
