Nigerian troops killed more than 300 suspected armed gang members during a major operation in Zamfara State after fierce clashes with kidnappers and cattle rustlers. The government described the operation as a major breakthrough in efforts to improve security in the region.

Nigerian troops have killed more than 300 suspected armed gang members during a large-scale military operation in Zamfara State, according to state authorities.
The operation took place over two days in Gummi Local Government Area, where security forces targeted criminal groups involved in kidnapping, cattle rustling and attacks on rural communities.
The Zamfara State Government described the operation as a major success in its campaign against armed gangs.

FIERCE GUN BATTLE

Residents said the fighting began late on Wednesday and continued into Thursday morning.

According to witnesses, soldiers and local vigilante groups confronted around 1,000 armed men who were reportedly moving from their camp with hundreds of stolen cattle.
Heavy gunfire and explosions were heard throughout the night as security forces battled the attackers.
Local residents said the military maintained pressure on the armed groups after the initial clashes.

MILITARY RETURNED BETTER PREPARED

Residents said troops had previously attempted to attack the same criminal camp about two weeks earlier but were forced to withdraw because of the large number of heavily armed fighters.

They said the military later returned with better planning and stronger support, leading to the successful operation.
Several residents estimated that more than 300 suspected gang members were killed during the fighting.

CRIMINAL GANGS CONTINUE TO TERRORISE COMMUNITIES

Armed gangs operating across northwestern and central Nigeria are known for kidnapping people for ransom, stealing livestock and attacking farming communities.

Many farmers are forced to pay illegal levies before they can access their own farmlands.
These attacks have contributed to growing insecurity, displacement and food shortages in several states.

GOVERNMENT HAILS OPERATION

The Zamfara State Government described the military offensive as a significant breakthrough in efforts to restore security.

Officials believe the operation has dealt a major blow to the activities of armed gangs in the region.
However, security operations are expected to continue as authorities pursue remaining members of the criminal groups.

NIGERIA FACES MULTIPLE SECURITY CHALLENGES

Nigeria continues to face serious security threats across different parts of the country.

In addition to armed gangs operating in the northwest, the country has battled Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgency in the northeast for more than a decade.
Authorities say they remain committed to tackling terrorism, kidnapping and organised crime across the country.
