Modi’s Historic Visit to Ghana Elevates Bilateral Ties and Cooperation





Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today met with the President of Ghana, H.E. Dr. John Dramani Mahama. Upon his arrival at Jubilee House, Prime Minister Modi was warmly received by President Mahama. This State Visit by the Prime Minister to Ghana is the first such visit by an Indian leader in nearly three decades, marking a significant moment in the history of India-Ghana relations.
The two leaders engaged in both restricted and delegation-level meetings, during which they held wide-ranging discussions on matters of mutual interest. They agreed to elevate the bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership. Both leaders reaffirmed the warm and long-standing ties between India and Ghana, and discussed ways to expand cooperation in key areas such as trade and investment, agriculture, capacity building, digital technology, infrastructure development, and people-to-people exchanges. They expressed satisfaction with the growing volume of bilateral trade and the increasing Indian investments in Ghana. Strengthening cooperation in defence and security was also identified as an important area of collaboration.
The leaders reiterated their commitment to further enhancing development cooperation, particularly through Indian-supported infrastructure and capacity-building projects in Ghana. India offered to share its experiences and expertise in various sectors including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, digital public infrastructure, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and skill development. Prime Minister Modi conveyed India’s firm commitment to championing the concerns and priorities of the Global South and expressed appreciation to Ghana for its support in this regard. He also thanked President Mahama for the Ghanaian government’s support and care for the Indian community of around 15,000 people residing in the country.
In addition to bilateral matters, the two leaders exchanged views on global issues of mutual interest, including the need for reforms in the United Nations. Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to President Mahama for Ghana’s solidarity following the Pahalgam terror attack. Both leaders affirmed their shared resolve to strengthen the global fight against terrorism. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Ghana on its growing international standing, noting its membership in the UN Human Rights Council and the election of Ghana’s Foreign Minister as the Commonwealth Secretary-General. They reiterated their commitment to democratic values, South-South cooperation, sustainable development, and global peace.
Following the talks, four Memorandums of Understanding were exchanged in the fields of Culture, Standards, Ayurveda and Traditional Medicine, and a Joint Commission Mechanism to enhance engagement between the Foreign Ministries of the two countries. President Mahama hosted a State Banquet in honour of Prime Minister Modi. In return, Prime Minister Modi thanked President Mahama for his warm hospitality and extended an invitation for him to visit India at a mutually convenient time.
