Gunmen Kill 29 in Attack on Adamawa Community Football Pitch
At least 29 people have been killed in a violent attack in northeast Adamawa State, according to the state governor, following a raid by armed gunmen on a community in Gombi Local Government Area.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri confirmed the death toll through his aide, who stated that “no fewer than 29 people” were killed in the assault on Guyaku community. The attack reportedly took place on Sunday afternoon and has left the area in shock and mourning.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the gunmen targeted civilians who had gathered at a football pitch in the community. A local resident, Philip Agabus, said the attackers arrived armed and opened fire indiscriminately on people who were assembled for leisure activities. According to him, the victims were mostly young people who had come together at the pitch before the violence erupted.
The sudden assault caused panic, with residents fleeing for safety as the attackers fired into the crowd. The exact identity and motive of the gunmen have not yet been officially confirmed by authorities, and investigations are ongoing to determine those responsible for the attack.
Security forces are expected to increase operations in the area as communities call for stronger protection amid growing concerns over repeated violent incidents in parts of northeastern Nigeria.
