Two workers at Frankfurt Airport in Germany have died after contracting malaria from mosquitoes believed to have been brought into the country aboard an aircraft, the city's health authority said Wednesday.

Airport officials had initially reported that one employee had died and that six workers had been infected. The death toll has since risen to two.
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany's public health agency, said an imported Anopheles mosquito carried into the airport by an aircraft was the likely source of the infections.
The remaining infected workers are receiving treatment in hospital, according to an airport spokesman.

HOW THE OUTBREAK MAY HAVE STARTED

Malaria is not normally transmitted in Germany because the disease's natural transmission cycle is largely associated with tropical and subtropical regions.
In rare cases, however, infected mosquitoes can travel inside aircraft arriving from countries where malaria is widespread. If such a mosquito survives after landing and bites people at or around an airport, it can potentially transmit the parasite.
The RKI said this type of airport-associated malaria outbreak is extremely uncommon in Germany.
The country's most recent known outbreak of airport-based malaria occurred in 2023.

RARE CASES CAN BE HARDER TO RECOGNISE

Health officials say the rarity of malaria in Germany can make diagnosis more difficult.
Doctors may not immediately suspect malaria when patients develop symptoms because the disease is uncommon in the country. Delayed diagnosis can allow the infection to become more severe.
Malaria can initially cause symptoms such as headaches, nausea, fever and intense chills. In serious cases, it can lead to complications affecting vital organs and can become fatal without prompt treatment.

OTHER WORKERS REMAIN IN HOSPITAL

Four of the infected airport employees were being treated in hospital, according to airport authorities.
Following the deaths, mosquito traps have been installed around the airport to help determine whether infected mosquitoes remain in the area and to monitor mosquito activity.
Specialists from the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium, are also expected to analyse blood samples from affected workers to identify and study the malaria parasites involved.
The investigation will help health authorities determine the precise source and transmission route.
