Six Reported Killed As Ukraine Launches Massive Drone Attack Across Russia

A major wave of Ukrainian drone attacks struck several Russian regions and occupied Crimea overnight. Russian authorities reported deaths and injuries in Perm, Belgorod and Sevastopol, while the Defence Ministry said 306 Ukrainian drones were intercepted or destroyed. The attacks come amid continued Russian strikes on Ukraine and stalled efforts by the United States to revive peace negotiations

A massive wave of Ukrainian drone attacks has struck several parts of Russia and occupied Crimea, leaving people dead and injured and causing damage to residential buildings, according to Russian authorities.
Initial reports put the death toll at at least six, including victims in the Belgorod region and Crimea. However, later Russian reports gave a lower confirmed toll of two deaths and seven injuries, illustrating how casualty figures were still being revised as authorities assessed the damage.
The attacks stretched from Russia's western border region of Belgorod to Perm, deep inside Russian territory near the Ural Mountains, as well as the Crimean port city of Sevastopol.

306 DRONES REPORTEDLY INTERCEPTED

Russia's Defence Ministry said its air-defence systems intercepted and destroyed 306 Ukrainian drones between Sunday evening and Monday morning.
The ministry said the drones were detected over numerous Russian regions, including Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Kursk, Rostov, Samara, Saratov and Perm, as well as over Crimea, Tatarstan, Udmurtia and Chuvashia.
Drones were also reportedly intercepted over the Black and Azov seas.
The scale of the reported attack makes it one of the largest recent Ukrainian drone barrages against Russian territory.

PERM HIT DEEP INSIDE RUSSIA

One of the most significant incidents occurred in Perm, around 1,300 kilometres from Ukraine.
Perm Governor Dmitry Makhonin said a drone struck a multi-storey apartment building, killing one person and injuring four others.
Russian authorities described the assault on the region as a massive drone attack and said 27 drones were destroyed over Perm.
There were also unconfirmed reports of smoke rising from an industrial area in Perm that contains important industrial facilities.
One report claimed a major oil refinery may have been targeted, although this has not been independently confirmed.

BELGOROD BORDER REGION ALSO TARGETED

The Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine and has repeatedly been targeted during the war, also came under attack.
Russian authorities initially reported that a man and a woman were killed after a drone struck their vehicle near the Ukrainian border.
A separate attack was later reported in the border town of Grayvoron, where another man was reportedly killed.
The region has experienced repeated cross-border drone and artillery attacks since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

CHILD AMONG VICTIMS IN SEVASTOPOL

In occupied Crimea, Russian-installed authorities reported another deadly attack in Sevastopol.
A teenage girl was killed after what officials described as a Ukrainian drone attack. Several other people were reportedly injured.
Russian authorities said the drone was packed with explosives and metal fragments and that debris damaged windows in several apartment buildings and a kindergarten.
The attack triggered emergency measures in the city as authorities searched affected areas and assessed the damage.

UKRAINE HAS INCREASINGLY TAKEN THE WAR DEEP INTO RUSSIA

The latest attacks are part of a broader Ukrainian strategy of using long-range drones to strike targets far from the front lines.
During the summer, Ukrainian drone attacks increasingly reached deep inside Russia, targeting military-related facilities, oil infrastructure, logistics centres and other strategically important sites.
The Associated Press reported that Russia intercepted more than 43,000 Ukrainian drones between June and August, highlighting the dramatic expansion of drone warfare.
The attacks have also disrupted civilian aviation, with Russian airports repeatedly forced to suspend operations because of drone threats.

RUSSIA HAS ALSO INTENSIFIED ATTACKS ON UKRAINE

The escalation is taking place as Russia continues its own large-scale aerial attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
Recent Russian attacks have killed civilians in Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions, with residential areas, railway infrastructure and energy facilities among the targets reported by Ukrainian authorities.
On September 4, a Russian drone also struck the headquarters of Ukraine's Security Service in central Kyiv, injuring at least 12 people and damaging buildings near the historic centre.
Both sides have increasingly relied on drones as a relatively inexpensive way of striking targets hundreds of kilometres behind enemy lines.

DRONE WARFARE IS CHANGING THE CONFLICT

The latest barrage demonstrates how the geographic boundaries of the war have continued to expand.
For Ukraine, long-range drone attacks offer a way to strike Russian military and industrial infrastructure without sending large numbers of troops across the border.
For Russia, the attacks have created growing pressure on air-defence systems and civilian infrastructure, while repeated airport closures have disrupted everyday life.
The attacks have also raised concerns about the vulnerability of industrial and energy facilities deep inside Russia.

PEACE TALKS REMAIN WITHOUT A BREAKTHROUGH

The escalation comes despite renewed diplomatic efforts to end the war.
US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner recently travelled to Moscow and Kyiv for discussions aimed at reviving negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
However, the latest talks have not produced a breakthrough, with major disagreements remaining over territory, security guarantees and the future status of occupied Ukrainian regions.
The continuing exchange of attacks suggests that, despite diplomatic efforts, both sides remain prepared to intensify military pressure.

THE WAR MOVES FURTHER INTO RUSSIA

From Belgorod near the Ukrainian border to Perm deep inside Russia, the latest attacks demonstrate the increasing reach of Ukraine's drone programme.
While Russia says hundreds of drones were intercepted, the reported deaths and damage show that some weapons still reached populated areas.
As Ukraine continues developing longer-range drones and Russia maintains its attacks on Ukrainian cities, the war is increasingly being fought not only along the front lines but also across the wider territories of both countries.
