Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region killed at least six people and injured about 24, damaging homes, a medical facility, a school and an industrial site. Poland activated preventive air operations to protect its airspace, while Romania reported a drone crash near the Ukrainian border. The attack comes amid increasing Russian strikes on Ukraine and Ukrainian long-range attacks inside Russia, raising wider regional security concerns.

At least six people have been killed and about 24 others injured after Russian strikes hit Kyiv and surrounding areas, Ukrainian authorities said early Thursday.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said Russia launched a ballistic missile attack on the Ukrainian capital, with explosions reported across several parts of the city.
The attacks damaged residential buildings, a medical facility and an educational institution, according to Kyiv's city military administration.
Authorities said at least five people were killed in Kyiv, while another person died in an attack on the nearby Brovary district.

INDUSTRIAL FACILITY ALSO DAMAGED

Kyiv regional Governor Tymur Tkachenko said the strike on Brovary damaged an industrial facility and started a fire.
Emergency services were deployed to the site to extinguish the blaze and assist those affected.
Ukrainian authorities continued to assess the damage and search affected areas as emergency operations remained underway.

POLAND ACTIVATES AIR OPERATIONS

The latest Russian strikes also prompted a response from neighbouring countries.
Poland's military said it launched preventive aviation operations to protect its airspace during the Russian attacks.
Warsaw frequently activates aircraft and other air-defence measures when large-scale Russian attacks are launched against western Ukraine because of the risk of missiles or drones approaching Polish territory.
Romania also reported that a drone crashed in an uninhabited area of Tulcea, near the Ukrainian border, during the attacks.

PREVIOUS RUSSIAN ATTACKS ON KYIV

The latest strikes come after a series of increasingly heavy Russian attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.
In previous major attacks, Russian missiles and drones have struck residential areas and critical infrastructure in the capital, causing civilian deaths, injuries and widespread damage.
The escalation has also affected neighbouring NATO countries, which have repeatedly been forced to increase air-surveillance and defensive operations when Russian attacks occur close to their borders.

UKRAINE ALSO STEPS UP STRIKES INSIDE RUSSIA

The latest attack comes amid a broader escalation in the Russia-Ukraine war.
While Russia has intensified missile and drone attacks across Ukraine, Ukraine has increasingly carried out long-range drone strikes deep inside Russian territory, targeting military, energy and industrial infrastructure.
Both sides say their attacks are aimed at military or strategic targets, while each has repeatedly accused the other of endangering civilians.
The continued escalation has raised concerns about the possibility of the conflict increasingly affecting areas beyond the immediate battlefield.

WAR CONTINUES INTO ANOTHER YEAR

Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and the conflict has continued despite repeated diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire.
The latest attacks underline the continuing vulnerability of Ukraine's major population centres and the wider security risks faced by countries bordering the conflict zone.
With Russian strikes on Kyiv increasing and Ukrainian forces expanding their long-range operations inside Russia, the conflict shows little sign of easing in the immediate term.
