Russian Drone Hits Train Near Poland Border Shortly After Boris Johnson Passes

A Russian drone struck a passenger train near Yahodyn, about 2 kilometres from Ukraine’s border with Poland, shortly after a separate diplomatic train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other European officials had passed through the area. No casualties were reported after passengers on the targeted train were evacuated about 15 minutes before the strike. Ukraine’s railway operator said the diplomatic train may have been the intended target, but there is no conclusive evidence to confirm this. The incident has heightened concerns in Poland and across Europe because of the strike’s proximity to NATO territory.

DRONE STRIKES TRAIN NEAR POLISH BORDER

A Russian drone has struck a passenger train near Ukraine’s border with Poland, just minutes after a separate diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other senior European officials had passed through the same area.
The strike occurred on Sunday at Yahodyn, in western Ukraine, about 2 kilometres from the Polish border. The drone hit the locomotive of a Kyiv-Warsaw passenger service.
No casualties were reported because passengers had been evacuated shortly before the attack. Ukraine’s state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, said its monitoring team detected the approaching jet-powered drone and an evacuation warning was issued about 15 minutes before the strike.

DIPLOMATIC TRAIN LEFT JUST BEFORE STRIKE

Johnson and other European officials had travelled through Yahodyn on a separate diplomatic train while returning from the Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv.
The group included former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt and security advisers from several European countries. Their train left the station earlier than originally scheduled because railway officials were adjusting timetables in response to continuing Russian strike threats.
Ukrzaliznytsia said it was “quite possible” that the drone had been intended for the diplomatic train, although the company has not presented definitive evidence proving that was the target.
The fact that the diplomatic train had already departed when the drone arrived has raised concerns about a potentially serious attack on senior European figures.

PETRAEUS WAS ALSO AT YAHODYN

Former CIA Director David Petraeus was on another train at Yahodyn station when the attack happened.
Petraeus described the incident as frightening and condemned the attack, saying it demonstrated the danger faced by Ukrainian civilians during Russia’s continuing campaign.
His train was not hit, and no casualties were reported among the people at the station.

CARL BILDT DESCRIBES EVACUATION WARNING

Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, who had travelled with the European delegation, said passengers on his train had also been warned to prepare for a possible evacuation.
He said the train stopped and passengers were instructed to be ready to leave before authorities later informed them that it was safe to continue.
The train subsequently reached Dorohusk, the Polish border station, without further incident.

RUSSIA SAYS RAILWAY INFRASTRUCTURE WAS TARGETED

Russia said its forces had struck railway infrastructure in western Ukraine.
Moscow has repeatedly said that attacks on Ukrainian transport infrastructure are aimed at disrupting military logistics and the movement of military equipment.
Ukraine, however, raised the possibility that the attack had a more specific target because of the timing of the strike and the presence of the diplomatic delegation in the area. The claim that Johnson’s train was specifically targeted remains unproven.

JOHNSON CALLS ATTACK SENSELESS

Johnson condemned the strike, describing it as another example of the attacks Ukrainians face on civilian railway infrastructure.
He also called for Ukraine’s allies to urgently provide more air-defence systems and interceptors to protect the country from Russian missiles and drones.
Ukraine has repeatedly appealed to Western countries for additional air-defence equipment as Russia continues to launch large-scale attacks across the country.

ATTACK BRINGS WAR CLOSER TO NATO

The location of the strike has heightened concern because Yahodyn is only about 2 kilometres from Poland, a member of both NATO and the European Union.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the attack as a warning that Russian aggression was moving increasingly close to EU and NATO territory.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also convened an emergency meeting over the incident, warning that Russian actions were becoming increasingly close to Poland's border.
A separate incident also reportedly involved a Russian drone striking a truck near the border, temporarily disrupting the Yahodyn-Dorohusk crossing.

A DANGEROUS MOMENT FOR EUROPEAN OFFICIALS

The incident has demonstrated the risks faced by foreign officials travelling by rail into and out of Ukraine.
Railways connecting Kyiv with Poland have become a crucial transport route for diplomats, politicians and international delegations visiting Ukraine during the war.
The fact that a passenger train was struck shortly after a diplomatic train carrying senior European figures had passed through the same location has intensified questions about Russia’s intentions, even though there is currently no conclusive evidence that Johnson or the other officials were the intended targets.
