A 22 year old British national has been arrested in Westminster on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts in connection with an incident near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. The arrest brings the total number of people detained over the incident to seven. Six other men, including a dual Iranian British national, have been released on police bail. The investigation remains active as counter terrorism officers examine suspicious vehicles reported near the airbase.

A 22 year old British national has been arrested in London on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts in connection with an incident near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.
The arrest was made in Westminster on Tuesday as counter terrorism police continued their investigation into suspicious activity reported near the military airbase last month.
The latest arrest brings the total number of people detained in connection with the incident to seven. The six other men arrested during the investigation have since been released on police bail while enquiries continue.

INCIDENT TRIGGERED MAJOR POLICE RESPONSE

The investigation began after police were alerted to three suspicious vehicles close to RAF Fairford.
The report prompted authorities to declare a major incident, while dozens of nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.
Police were particularly concerned because of the location of the vehicles close to a major military facility. Officers launched an investigation to establish who was involved, why the vehicles were in the area and whether there was any threat to the airbase, local residents or military personnel.
The evacuation allowed officers to investigate the situation while reducing the potential risk to people living near the site.

FIVE MEN WERE FIRST ARRESTED NEAR THE BASE

Five men were arrested in the early hours of Sunday, September 27, after vehicles were reportedly seen travelling towards RAF Fairford.
The men were aged between 23 and 25. They were initially arrested on suspicion of explosives offences before the investigation was expanded to include suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.
All five were later released on police bail.
Counter Terrorism Policing described the decision to release them as an investigative decision based on police experience and strategy. Being released on bail does not mean that the investigation has ended or that the individuals have been cleared of suspicion.

SIXTH MAN ALSO ARRESTED IN WESTMINSTER

A sixth suspect, a 25 year old dual Iranian British national, was arrested in Westminster on October 1.
He was also subsequently released on police bail as detectives continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The arrests in Westminster, away from the airbase itself, indicate that investigators have been pursuing leads beyond the immediate area around RAF Fairford.

LATEST ARREST BRINGS TOTAL TO SEVEN

The latest suspect, a 22 year old British national, was arrested in Westminster on Tuesday.
He was arrested on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts. Police have not announced that any of the suspects have been charged.
Counter Terrorism Policing senior national coordinator Vicki Evans said the investigation remains active, with officers continuing to pursue multiple lines of enquiry.
This means detectives are still examining different possibilities, evidence and connections to establish exactly what happened and whether the incident was linked to a wider planned operation.

POLICE HAVE NOT ANNOUNCED A COMPLETED TERRORIST PLOT

Despite the arrests, the investigation remains ongoing and police have not publicly established that a terrorist attack was carried out or that the suspects have been convicted of any offence.
The distinction is important because arrest on suspicion is not the same as being charged or found guilty.
The suspects' release on bail also means investigators are continuing to gather evidence before deciding what further action should be taken.
Police are expected to examine the vehicles, movements of the suspects, communications and any other evidence that could help establish what happened near the airbase.

WHY RAF FAIRFORD IS IMPORTANT

RAF Fairford is located near the village of Whelford in Gloucestershire and has been used by the United States Air Force for decades.
The base is therefore an important military site, making security around the facility a significant concern for British and American authorities.
Its location also means that any serious security incident can affect nearby communities, particularly when residents have to leave their homes while police investigate a potential threat.
The evacuation following the discovery of the suspicious vehicles demonstrated the precautionary approach taken by authorities when an incident occurs close to a sensitive military installation.

INVESTIGATION REMAINS ACTIVE

Counter Terrorism Policing has not indicated that the investigation is over.
With seven arrests now made and the six earlier suspects released on bail, detectives are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the vehicles and the activities of those arrested.
The latest arrest also shows that the investigation has continued beyond the original incident and is being handled as a counter terrorism matter.
Authorities are expected to provide further information if charges are brought or if significant developments emerge.

POLICE CONTINUE TO PURSUE MULTIPLE LINES OF ENQUIRY

The immediate focus remains on establishing why the vehicles were travelling towards RAF Fairford, who was involved and whether there was any intended threat connected to the airbase.
For residents and personnel in the area, the investigation is also intended to establish whether there was any continuing security risk.
Until the investigation is completed, the individuals arrested remain suspects rather than convicted offenders.
