Australian MP Helen Haines Loses Both Legs in Suspected Deliberate Vehicle Attack
LAWMAKER REMAINS STABLE AFTER MULTIPLE SURGERIES
Australian independent MP Helen Haines has lost both legs after being struck by a vehicle in an incident that police are investigating as a suspected deliberate attack.
Her husband, Phil Haines, confirmed on Wednesday that doctors had amputated both legs following the incident outside her constituency office in Wangaratta, northeast of Melbourne, in the state of Victoria.
Despite the severity of her injuries, he said she was alive and in stable condition, describing her survival as the most important concern for the family.
The 65 year old lawmaker was initially reported to have lost her left leg after undergoing emergency surgery on Monday night. Doctors later amputated her right leg on Wednesday after attempts to save it were unsuccessful.
The incident has shocked the local community and prompted renewed concerns about the safety of elected representatives in Australia.
POLICE INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE DELIBERATE ATTACK
Counterterrorism investigators have joined the police investigation into the incident, which occurred outside Haines’ constituency office.
A 43 year old man from nearby Tarrawingee appeared before Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. He faces charges including intentionally causing serious injury, dangerous driving causing serious injury and causing harm to a federal official.
According to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, early information suggested that the driver made a U turn before striking Haines while she was loading or unloading items from the boot of her vehicle.
Witnesses reportedly heard a bang and saw a woman trapped between two cars. Subsequent accounts suggested that the driver first pinned Haines against her vehicle before reversing and striking her again.
Albanese said the circumstances appeared to indicate a deliberate act, although investigators were still examining what happened and the possible motive.
The suspect’s lawyer told the court that his client had a rare neurological condition, a possible undiagnosed mental health condition and a concussion. These matters were presented by the defence and do not establish the motive for the incident.
LOCAL BARBER INTERVENES BEFORE POLICE ARRIVE
A local barber, Ricky Jeffries, has received praise for intervening shortly after the collision.
Jeffries, whose shop is next to Haines’ office, reportedly pulled the driver from the vehicle and restrained him until police arrived.
He said the driver had a knife in the car but did not take it out. Concerned by the man’s movements, Jeffries said he removed the knife and threw it away before keeping the suspect on the ground.
Despite the risks involved, Jeffries played down his actions and said other people at the scene also deserved recognition for their assistance.
His intervention has drawn attention to the role ordinary members of the public can play during emergencies, although such situations can be dangerous and are best handled without unnecessary confrontation where possible.
AUSTRALIAN LEADERS CONDEMN THE INCIDENT
Prime Minister Albanese expressed concern over the attack and said it was too early to determine the motive. He also warned that political violence and hostility towards public officials were growing concerns.
Victoria’s state premier, Ben Carroll, said he was appalled by the incident and acknowledged the distress it would cause in Wangaratta and among the people Haines represents.
The investigation comes amid wider concerns about threats and harassment directed at politicians and other senior public officials in Australia and other countries.
However, authorities have not yet established whether the incident was politically motivated.
WHO IS HELEN HAINES?
Helen Haines entered Australia’s federal parliament in 2019 as an independent representative. Before entering politics, she worked as a nurse and midwife.
She is known for supporting stronger action on climate change and has represented her constituency on national policy issues.
The attack has raised questions about the protection available to elected officials while they carry out public duties, including meeting constituents and working from local offices.
INVESTIGATION CONTINUES AS FAMILY FOCUSES ON RECOVERY
Police and counterterrorism investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether it was deliberate and what may have motivated the driver.
Meanwhile, Haines’ family is focusing on her recovery following the life threatening injuries and multiple operations.
Her husband has expressed gratitude that she remains alive and stable. The incident has also prompted renewed calls for public officials to be protected from violence and for threats against them to be taken seriously.
The investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances of the collision, while the court proceedings will determine the legal case against the accused.
