At least seven people were killed and 19 injured in a stampede at Bihar’s Ashok Dham temple during the holy month of Shravan. A fallen electric pole and broken barricade reportedly triggered panic. The tragedy has renewed crowd-safety concerns, coming months after nine people were killed in another temple stampede in Bihar’s Nalanda district. Authorities are investigating the latest incident.

At least seven people have been killed and 19 others injured in a stampede at the Ashok Dham temple in Lakhisarai district of India’s eastern Bihar state, Indian media reported.
The incident occurred on Monday as a large crowd of devotees gathered at the temple to offer water to Lord Shiva during the holy Hindu month of Shravan.

PANIC TRIGGERED DEADLY STAMPEDE

According to police, an electric pole fell at the temple, triggering panic among the devotees.
Senior police officer Shivam Kumar said authorities were still investigating the circumstances and would determine the exact cause after verifying the available information.
Lakhisarai district magistrate Shailendra Kumar said a barricade also broke under the pressure of the crowd, causing several people to fall on one another.
At least 19 injured devotees were taken to hospitals for treatment.

AUTHORITIES ORDER INVESTIGATION

Authorities have launched a probe into the incident and are examining the crowd-control arrangements at the temple.
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary directed officials to ensure that the injured receive immediate medical attention.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the deaths and offered condolences to the victims’ families, while wishing those injured a speedy recovery.

SECOND DEADLY TEMPLE STAMPEDE IN BIHAR THIS YEAR

The tragedy has renewed concerns about crowd management at major religious gatherings in Bihar.
On March 31, nine devotees, including eight women, were killed in a stampede at the Maa Sheetla Temple in Nalanda district during a crowded religious gathering.
The latest incident therefore represents another major temple-related crowd tragedy in the state within the same year.

CROWD SAFETY REMAINS A CONCERN

Large religious gatherings in India frequently attract thousands or even millions of devotees, creating significant challenges for crowd control, emergency access and evacuation.
The Ashok Dham incident occurred during one of the busiest periods of the Hindu religious calendar in the region.
Authorities are expected to examine whether existing safety measures were adequate and whether additional controls are needed to prevent similar tragedies during future religious gatherings.
The investigation will also seek to establish the precise sequence of events that led to the deadly crush.
