A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck off Egypt's northeastern coast in the early hours of Monday, prompting emergency response measures across several governorates although there were no immediate reports of fatalities or major destruction.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at about 3:00 a.m. local time (0000 GMT) approximately 36 kilometres northeast of the strategic port city of Suez.
Germany's GFZ Centre for Geosciences measured the quake at a slightly stronger magnitude 5.4 and estimated its depth at 10 kilometres, making it a relatively shallow earthquake capable of being felt over a wide area.
Residents in Cairo, Suez, Ismailia and parts of the Nile Delta reported feeling the tremor, with many briefly leaving their homes as a precaution.

EGYPT ACTIVATES EMERGENCY RESPONSE

The Egyptian Red Crescent immediately activated its emergency response plan in areas where the earthquake was felt.
Emergency teams were placed on standby to inspect buildings, monitor infrastructure and assist residents if necessary.
Authorities advised citizens to avoid buildings showing visible structural cracks until safety inspections could be completed.
By Monday morning, officials said no deaths, injuries or significant damage had been reported.

WHY THE QUAKE WAS WIDELY FELT

Seismologists explained that although the earthquake was moderate in magnitude, its relatively shallow depth allowed tremors to spread across a large area.
The Gulf of Suez lies within an active tectonic zone where the African and Arabian plates gradually move apart, occasionally generating earthquakes.
Most earthquakes in the region are minor, but experts warn that stronger events remain possible because of the area's geological setting.

EGYPT'S DEADLIEST MODERN EARTHQUAKE

The latest tremor has revived memories of the devastating 1992 Cairo earthquake, the deadliest seismic disaster in modern Egyptian history.
The magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck near the Egyptian capital on 12 October 1992, killing more than 540 people, injuring thousands and leaving around 50,000 people homeless.
Hundreds of schools, homes and historic buildings suffered severe damage, while panic spread across Cairo as frightened residents fled into the streets.
The disaster exposed weaknesses in building standards and prompted the government to strengthen emergency preparedness and earthquake monitoring systems.

RECENT EARTHQUAKES IN THE REGION

Although damaging earthquakes are relatively rare in Egypt, the country has experienced several noticeable tremors in recent years.
In October 2023, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that struck western Afghanistan was felt in parts of Egypt because of the long-distance transmission of seismic waves.
Earlier in February 2023, residents across northern Egypt felt tremors from the devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck southern Türkiye and northern Syria, killing more than 59,000 people and becoming one of the deadliest natural disasters in the region's modern history.
Egypt also experienced a magnitude 6.4 earthquake near Crete in 2021, with shaking reported across Alexandria, Cairo and other northern cities, although no significant damage occurred.

EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN REMAINS SEISMICALLY ACTIVE

The Eastern Mediterranean is among the world's most seismically active regions.
Countries including Türkiye, Greece, Cyprus and Italy experience frequent earthquakes because several major tectonic plates converge beneath the Mediterranean basin.
While Egypt is less vulnerable than some of its neighbours, earthquakes originating in the Mediterranean Sea, the Gulf of Aqaba and the Gulf of Suez are regularly felt across the country.
Scientists say continued investment in early warning systems, stronger building standards and public awareness campaigns remains essential to reducing future earthquake risks.
Authorities continue to monitor the affected area for aftershocks, although officials say the situation remains stable and there is currently no indication of significant damage.
