More than 50 inmates have escaped from a prison in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Kasai Province, prompting a major security operation as authorities investigate allegations that prison personnel may have helped facilitate the jailbreak.
The prisoners escaped from Luebo Prison in the country's south-central region during the night between Thursday and Friday, according to local authorities.
Luebo Territorial Administrator Jean Tshiawuke wa Tshiawuke said the escape appeared to have been carefully coordinated, noting that the inmates did not force open the prison's locks before fleeing.
"The entire prison remained empty. It was a well-prepared escape, as the inmates did not open the padlocks," he told reporters.

SECURITY OFFICERS UNDER INVESTIGATION

Authorities suspect some prison security personnel may have played a role in the escape by granting inmates access to secured areas or deliberately failing to stop them.
An investigation has been launched to determine how the prisoners managed to leave the facility without damaging security infrastructure.
Officials say the findings could lead to disciplinary measures or criminal prosecutions if any officers are found to have collaborated with the escapees.

DANGEROUS PRISONERS ON THE RUN

Authorities warned that several of the escaped inmates are considered dangerous and could pose a threat to surrounding communities.
Three rifles were also reported missing during the jailbreak, raising concerns that the fugitives may now be armed.
