U.S. troops and equipment have arrived in Maiduguri, Borno state, for a temporary support-focused deployment to assist Nigerian forces. The personnel will operate from command centers in non-combat roles. The move comes amid security challenges in northern Nigeria and increased domestic measures by the Nigerian army.
U.S. Troops Arrive in Maiduguri for Support Role in Nigerian Security Operations
Three U.S. military aircraft carrying troops, weapons, and other equipment have landed in Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria’s Borno state, signaling the start of a new bilateral security deployment between the United States and Nigeria. Nigerian Defence Headquarters officials confirmed that the arrival marks an initial phase of the deployment, with roughly 100 U.S. troops arriving between Thursday and Sunday. Additional flights carrying more personnel and equipment are expected in the coming weeks, as part of a broader plan to provide support to Nigeria’s security operations in the region.
An official, who requested anonymity, told Anadolu on Monday that the U.S. personnel will focus strictly on non-combat roles. They are primarily assigned to operate from command centers and provide logistical, technical, and strategic support to Nigerian forces rather than participating directly in frontline operations. This arrangement is intended to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to manage security challenges while maintaining operational control within Nigerian forces. Maj. Gen. Samaila Uba, the spokesperson for Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, reiterated that U.S. personnel “do not serve in a combat capacity and will not assume a direct operational role” in any military engagements.
The deployment comes amid renewed scrutiny from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has publicly criticized Nigeria’s response to attacks targeting Christian communities in certain regions. In response, the Nigerian government emphasized that violent attacks have affected multiple communities, including Muslims and other groups, and that casualties have been suffered across different segments of the population. Officials highlighted that the government is taking steps to address security concerns impartially and to prevent further loss of life.
Meanwhile, Nigeria has also intensified domestic security measures. The Nigerian army announced the deployment of special forces units to Plateau and Taraba states, areas that have experienced recurring violent clashes and community unrest. These measures are part of a broader strategy to maintain stability and prevent escalation of violence across vulnerable regions.
Although the Nigerian authorities have not disclosed the exact duration of the U.S. troop presence, American officials have indicated that the deployment is temporary and focused on providing support rather than direct engagement in combat. The collaboration is expected to enhance Nigeria’s operational effectiveness and strengthen the country’s efforts to address security threats while maintaining local command authority over military operations.
This deployment reflects ongoing U.S.-Nigeria security cooperation, particularly in northern Nigeria, where insurgency and communal violence remain major challenges. By focusing on support and advisory roles, the U.S. aims to assist Nigerian forces in managing threats more efficiently while minimizing direct foreign combat involvement.
