Tinubu Mourns Victims Of Deadly Nigerian Air Force Plane Crash
Nigeria is mourning after a Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, during a routine flight from Benin City to Lagos.
President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences to the families of those on board, describing the incident as a painful moment for the Nigerian Armed Forces and the country as a whole.
Although the Nigerian military had not officially released a final casualty figure at the time of the statement, comments from the presidency indicated that all 32 people aboard the aircraft were feared to have died. The passengers were 25 in number, while seven members of the Nigerian Air Force crew were also on board.
THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED DURING A ROUTINE MISSION
The aircraft was travelling from Benin City in southern Nigeria towards Lagos when it went down shortly after 9:00am local time on Monday.
The crash occurred at Igbokoda in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, an oil producing part of the state located along Nigeria's coastal region.
President Tinubu and the Nigerian Air Force described the flight as a routine mission. The circumstances surrounding the crash, including what happened to the aircraft before it went down, remained unclear.
The aircraft was identified as an ATR 42, a twin engine turboprop aircraft commonly used for short and medium distance flights.
32 PEOPLE WERE ON BOARD
According to a statement issued by President Tinubu's spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the aircraft was carrying 25 passengers and seven crew members.
The President extended his condolences to the families of the passengers and members of the crew, as well as to the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and personnel of the Nigerian Air Force.
The identities of the victims had not been publicly released at the time of the statement.
The lack of an immediate official casualty confirmation meant that authorities still had to complete their search, recovery and identification efforts before providing a final account of the deaths.
SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAMS RESPONDED
Following the crash, search and rescue operations were launched in the area.
Nigerian Air Force spokesperson Ehimen Ejodame said the operation was being conducted in coordination with relevant authorities and emergency response agencies.
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo also said the aircraft had crashed near a naval base.
The location presented challenges for emergency responders because Igbokoda is in the Ilaje area, a coastal and oil producing region where waterways and difficult terrain can make access to some locations more complicated.
Emergency teams therefore had to secure the crash area, search for survivors and account for everyone who had been on board.
PRESIDENT ORDERS INVESTIGATION INTO THE CRASH
President Tinubu described the incident as a painful moment for the Armed Forces and the entire nation.
He directed the Nigerian Air Force to immediately begin a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the crash.
The investigation will be important in determining what happened before the aircraft went down and whether mechanical problems, weather conditions, human factors, operational circumstances or other issues played a role.
Such investigations are also intended to identify safety concerns and recommend measures that could help prevent similar accidents in the future.
FOCUS TURNS TO THE CAUSE OF THE CRASH
The immediate priority following the accident was the search and rescue operation and the recovery and identification of those involved.
Attention will also turn to the aircraft itself, its maintenance history, flight records, weather conditions and the events leading up to the crash.
Investigators are expected to examine available evidence from the crash site and other relevant records before reaching conclusions about the cause.
For the families of those on board, however, the investigation is only one part of the tragedy. They are now facing the difficult task of dealing with the loss of their loved ones while waiting for official information and confirmation from the authorities.
The crash has also renewed attention on the safety of military aviation and the importance of proper aircraft maintenance, crew training, operational procedures and effective emergency response.
