In his earlier statement, Nchimbi thanked Tanzanians for the cooperation and support he received during his years in public service.
He said that although he was leaving politics and public service, he would continue to contribute to the country as a citizen.
Nchimbi's departure brings an end to his tenure as vice president and opens the way for President Hassan to select a new deputy under Tanzania's constitutional procedures.
