The Sudanese army says it repelled multiple RSF attacks in Kordofan and Darfur, destroying and seizing dozens of vehicles and killing many fighters. Clashes, including a “fierce battle” in Bara, continue as both sides claim control. The escalating conflict has forced tens of thousands to flee and worsened a humanitarian crisis that has displaced nearly 13 million people since April 2023.
Sudanese Army Repels RSF Attacks in Kordofan and Darfur Amid Escalating Conflict
The Sudanese army announced on Tuesday that it had successfully repelled a series of attacks launched by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) across the Kordofan and Darfur regions within the past 24 hours, stating that the paramilitary group suffered heavy losses during the confrontations.
In an official statement, the army said its troops, alongside allied joint units, sustained coordinated military operations on several fronts. These operations involved responding to RSF offensives, engaging in direct combat, and inflicting significant damage in terms of both personnel and military equipment.
According to the statement, RSF fighters carried out a large-scale assault on army positions in the town of Al Tina, located in North Darfur. The army reported that its forces, supported by joint units, were able to repel the attack after intense fighting. During the engagement, the army said it destroyed 35 RSF combat vehicles and seized an additional 49 vehicles, while also killing dozens of RSF fighters.
Describing the clashes as intense, the army further disclosed that another RSF attack targeted the city of Al Dilling in South Kordofan. This assault was also repelled, with the army stating that five RSF combat vehicles were destroyed and four others captured. In addition to the vehicles, communication equipment belonging to the RSF was also seized by government forces.
The statement added that Sudanese air defence units intercepted and shot down what was described as a “hostile strategic drone” on Tuesday morning. The drone was reportedly brought down over Al Obeid, a key city in North Kordofan.
In a separate development, the army said its forces were involved in what it described as a “fierce battle” in the city of Bara, also in North Kordofan. Following the confrontation, the army indicated that its troops repositioned outside the city after inflicting heavy losses on RSF fighters. However, on Monday, the RSF claimed that it had taken control of Bara after clashes with government forces.
Beyond Darfur, the three Kordofan states have experienced a sharp escalation in fighting in recent weeks, as clashes between the Sudanese army and RSF intensify. The surge in violence has forced tens of thousands of civilians to flee their homes in search of safety.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF dates back to April 2023, when tensions erupted over plans to integrate the paramilitary group into the national military structure. Since then, the ongoing fighting has created one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and displacing nearly 13 million people.
