The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claim to have seized control of Abu Qamra and Ambro towns in North Darfur, previously held by the Sudanese army. RSF posted videos showing their presence, while the army has not responded. The RSF controls most of Darfur, and the ongoing conflict with the army, which started in April 2023, has killed thousands and displaced millions.
RSF Claims Control of Two Towns in North Darfur Amid Ongoing Sudan Conflict
The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have announced that they have taken control of two areas in North Darfur state, located in western Sudan. Local sources informed Anadolu that RSF forces, mobilizing on dozens of combat vehicles, stormed Abu Qamra, a town situated approximately 200 kilometres northwest of Al Fasher, the provincial capital. This area had previously been under the control of the Sudanese army and its allied forces.
In addition to Abu Qamra, the sources reported that RSF forces launched an attack on Ambro town, which lies roughly 300 kilometres northwest of Al Fasher. The paramilitary group stated in a public release that its fighters have “tightened control” over both areas. Supporting their claims, RSF fighters posted videos on social media that appeared to show their presence in the towns. As of now, there has been no immediate response or comment from the Sudanese army regarding the RSF’s claims.
Out of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF currently controls all five states in the Darfur region in the west, with the exception of certain northern parts of North Darfur that remain under the army’s authority. Conversely, the Sudanese army maintains control over most areas across the remaining 13 states in the south, north, east, and central regions, including the capital, Khartoum.
The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023, has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis. Thousands of people have lost their lives since the fighting began, and millions have been forced to flee their homes, creating widespread displacement and instability across the country.
