Morocco Launches Africa Cup of Nations-Themed Banknote and Coin

Morocco has released a special Africa Cup of Nations-themed banknote and coin to mark its hosting of the tournament. Both feature national symbols, references to football, and the country’s new sports facilities. The silver coin is valued at 250 dirhams and the banknote at 100 dirhams. All design and production were done by Moroccan specialists, and the coin features a portrait of King Mohammed VI with inscriptions in Arabic script.

The central bank of Morocco, Bank Al-Maghrib, explained that both the commemorative banknote and coin incorporate national symbols alongside references to football, reflecting the kingdom’s pride in hosting the tournament. The bank further noted that these items also showcase Morocco’s newly developed sports facilities, which have been upgraded to meet international standards for the competition.
The silver coin has a face value of 250 dirhams, which is approximately equivalent to twenty-seven dollars and fifty cents, while the banknote is valued at 100 dirhams. Both have been officially released into circulation, allowing the public to acquire and use them as legal tender.
Bank Al-Maghrib emphasized that the entire design and production process of the commemorative coin and banknote was conducted exclusively by Moroccan specialists, highlighting the nation’s capability in producing high-quality currency and commemorative items.
The coin is made from a silver and copper alloy, giving it both durability and aesthetic appeal, and it weighs nearly thirty grams. On its front side, the coin features a detailed portrait of King Mohammed VI. Surrounding the portrait are inscriptions in Arabic script that read “Mohammed VI” and “Royaume du Maroc,” reinforcing both the national identity and royal heritage of the kingdom.
The release of these commemorative currency items not only celebrates Morocco’s role as the host of the Africa Cup of Nations but also serves as a symbolic reminder of the country’s achievements in sports development and national pride.
